I'm less interested in media and modes of distribution as I am the 'discussion paradigm' that we all partake in. There was a time, not too long ago, we discussed -- to a far greater extent -- the music and the films and the contents of the soundtrack albums as they were, but this has faded considerably in the last 10-15 years. Now it's mostly about expansions, speculation, unreleased cues and the expectations for what comes NEXT. The 'expansion craze' probably won't die any time soon, but I have this hope that it will reach its saturation point so that we can get back to talking about the films and the music as aesthetic products rather than "archeological" ones. That's my wish for the future. I also wish labels will eventually turn from expansions to completely unreleased scores. Not that they're not doing that already, but I feel there's a definite priority shift towards the former side. As for how the music is distributed....well, I hardly buy CDs anymore, so I'm all fine with continuing whatever development digital distribution has in store for us. Some ownership would be nice, though, so that it's not ALL streaming.

The trend is to have the music available in some "non carrier" format. It is going to be in the direction of STAR TREK - THE NEXT GENERATION. You want to listen to a Sony recording of John Williams? Tell "Siri Jr." and it'll play. Movies and music will be available, for streaming, for download... It's just not very practical to use physical carrier mediums. I don't think there will be a "CD renaissance" as there was a vinyl renaissance, because the return of vinyl was a return to "analog", to "steam engine" if you will, to not having your sound translated into digital bits and bytes. There is no such reason for CDs to return: the data is digital, the data is the same. I am located near a store who claimed to be the largest record store in the world at some time: Cologne's Saturn Music Dome. It still has a decent CD selection and pretty much all regular releases (and even some limited releases) are there on display, including some Intrada MAF releases like CONAN. Still, this is a store whose classical music selection alone once had the size of two department size floors... these days it's just a few dozen yards of shelf space, a shadow of its former self. Space has been allocated for Blu Rays, DVDs, etc... And I have to admit: digital files are comfortable.. I have currently almost converted my entire collection to Apple Lossless files, and on the go for my car or my mobile I use AAC files (in higher resolution). Today, you can take hundreds of albums with you in high quality in a small pocket size unit. So, I still buy CDs and enjoy the releases... but the days of this type of music distribution are numbered, I'd say. It was a great time while it lasted, thoughj. :-)

He's never written an interesting score. Just a lot of dull strings going around in circles." "I'm excited for this! Desplat never disappoints." "Here's three You-Tube links that will make you like Desplat!" "I hate all of those. But it's just opinions. It's okay." "New samples of the score released!" "Wow, those samples sound like the most dull thing ever! Skipping this score." "Loving what I'm hearing!" "Album art released!" "Wow, that looks bad." "Just gave the score a listen, it might be in my top ten of the year." "This score is just awful!" "Desplat is a hack and he just vomits out the same trash over and over. Anyone who likes him has no taste in music."
