BILLY JACK GOES TO WASHINGTON was the fourth and last of the films featuring the character of "Billy Jack," a half-Indian, Vietnam veteran. In this film, after a senator suddenly dies after completing (and sealing) an investigation into the nuclear power industry, the remaining senator (E.G. Marshall) and the state governor (Dick Gautier) must decide on a Senate replacement who will play along with their shady deals and not cause any problems. They settle on Billy Jack (Tom Laughlin). Laughlin directed the film under his regular pseudonym of T.C. Frank. Elmer Bernstein provided the unreleased score.

Although the advance ad art for for the film announced a December 1976 release date, that never happened. Despite various previews around the country (Los Angeles on 16 April 1977; Omaha on 17 April 1977; Washington, DC on 22 April 1977) the film never had a regular theatrical release. Billy Jack's final installment would be seen by most people only with the advent of home video.

Nineteen years after 'Get Smart" left the air, Don Adams returned to television screens again as "Maxwell Smart" in the 1989 television movie GET SMART, AGAIN!. In the interim, he had been in the 1980 theatrical film THE NUDE BOMB. For the television movie, Dick Gautier reprised his role of "Hymie," the robot, who had not appeared in the theatrical film. The television film aired on ABC, completing Maxwell Smart's traversal of the three major American networks. The series had started on NBC, where it remained for five seasons before moving to CBS for its sixth and final season. Burton Nodella directed the film, which had an unreleased score by Peter Rodgers Melnick.

With the exception of an appearance in one direct-to-video film, Dick Gautier spent the next ten years in television, doing a few guest shots on series, but primarily doing cartoon voice-over work. He retired in 2000, returning to television just once afterward, for an appearance on a 2010 episode of the series “Nip/Tuck.”
