At the 1974 Oscars.

Both John Williams and Marvin Hamlisch were nominated in the Dramatic Score and Adaptation Score categories.

Williams for CINDERELLA LIBERTY & TOM SAWYER and Hamlisch for THE WAY WE WERE & THE STING.

Hamlisch won in both categories.

Jerry Goldsmith lost for his nominated PAPILLON.

We might as well mention that Marvin Hamlisch beat John Williams a third time that year--for Best Song.

Reminds me of the time when Marvin Hamlisch was the guest of John Williams and the Boston Pops. Mr. Hamlisch mentioned that for 1982 he was nominated for best score for Sophie's Choice but said he didn't win with a sly grin in Mr. Williams' direction. Also stated that he thought the Academy of Arts and Sciences sat people and placed the winners with easy access to the aisle. Mr. Hamlisch went to his seat stated excuse me, excuse me as he moved in and joked he was in the middle of a row. Where was John Williams seated? His funny response was John was seated in the aisle.

Good to see good friends and good musicians having fun without the rancor of competitors.

In accepting the best song award for "The Way We Were," Hamlisch thanks his agent and his manager; thanks Sam Spiegel, who gave him his first film scoring job on THE SWIMMER (1968); and thanks Marty Erlichman, who was and apparently still is Barbra Streisand's manager, for his belief in the song.

Papillon should have won hands down

Sounds like a pretty dire year.
1974 was one of those rare occasions that the Golden Globes got it right and the Oscars didn't so yeah terrible.

Then there was 1977 when Hamlisch's "Nobody Does It Better" lost to.... "You Light Up My Life."

And what wasn't even nominated? "New York, New York!"

Williams made out okay that year.
