All-right, I've had it with iTunes and their no FLAC support. I'm breaking free. ALAC, although now open source, just isn't supported on too many devices/programs to use it as an alternative. So I ask you Film Score Monthly Message Boarders, what else is there? All I want is something that can rip CDs to FLAC/play FLAC, handle large libraries, feature album art prominently, and isn't from a transient company that won't last. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?!!!!!

My big issue with iTunes is it deleting my playlist just when ever it wants. I put together tons and tons of playlists, which are basically the soundtrack albums. I listen to them, put them on my iPhone etc. etc. delete them from my iPhone put on new playlists then months later I'm like I get a craving to listen to The New World by Horner and go to my playlists on my Mac at home and sure enough, the playlist has been deleted and then I have to create it again.

Anyone have that issue? I went to Apple's genius bar and they said they have lots of complaints about this, but they told Edwin and I, they haven't gotten enough complaints for them to look into it further. Odd answer. They know there is an issue, but won't look into it. frown

Winamp can actually do pretty much everything you're looking for. I've got over 3,500 albums ripped as FLAC files to a network drive, and use Winamp to sort them all by composer and year. I use Exact Audio Copy for the ripping, but Winamp can rip to FLAC as well if you only want to use a single program. The album art is a bit small with the way I have it set up, but you should be able to change that to make the album art much more prominent if that's your preference.

You can check out this thread that I started when I was in the market for an iTunes alternative:

EAC for ripping is the best. There are a couple others, but once you set it up you never have to change a thing. Look for "EAC setup guide" on google.

For playing I use Winamp mostly, but if you want something more robust, you can't go wrong with Foobar2000 (which can also be used for ripping, but is a bit clunkier)

XLD is a free download. It provides error-free rips, and if even one tiny sector of a disc is damaged, it tells you so in the post-rip report. I have been backing up my accumulation over the course of the last 6 or 7 years using this program.

Onya, does it allow you to rip back to an iPod or can you only do that via iTunes? My big issue is finding an iTunes alternative BUT I love my 3 iPods. (Yep, 3 160GB iPods.)

Don't understand why your music has to be in the FLAC format? Apple Lossless works with iTunes and is just what the name implies, a lossless audio format.

I use iTunes and have converted most of my CDs to ALAC by now... I'm not 100% happy with iTunes, but for my money it is far mightier and more convenient than any of the alternatives I have tested.

That's really weird. Perhaps it has to do with your sync settings? I make playlists almost every day and I've never had one disappear on me.

For ripping, EAC/Exact Audio Copy is the reference.

For the library part, I just switched from the austere Foobar2000 to MusicBee, which has a great visual apparence and still many features : http://getmusicbee.com/

Sync from my iPhone to Mac at home? It's just so strange, even playlists I don't move over to my iPhone after a while playlists are just deleted for some reason.

I use JRiver Media Center and love it. Switched from iTunes about 3 years ago.

To echo what others said, you really shouldn't be ripping CDs through your audio player. That's like scanning with your printer. It works but the results aren't as good as a dedicated device. So ripping with EAC and managing your library with Foobar2000 would work nicely. If you really want to rely on the tags to manage everything, Foobar does have library support.

What dedicated devices would you recommend

I gave up iTunes for MusicBee and have not regretted it at all.
