THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE stars Jason Robards, Stella Stevens, David Warner and Strother Martin (all in one of their top performances) with the music of Jerry Goldsmith. I spent 2 years requesting THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE screen in 35mm at the Wells Fargo theater at the Autry and now "tomorrow" is the song I sing. With the usually quite informative pre-talk, this is a very rare opportunity I recommend it to everyone. Even the rain is suppose to go away for this.

I seem to have forgotten the most important part. The film was by Sam Peckinpah. But in my opinion his gentlest and most lyrical.

It has been a long time since I've seen this. The last time L. Q. Jones showed up to introduce it and share memories of it. I wonder whatever happened to Richard Gillis?

Nice movie with the absolute shittiest score of all-time. What a piece of crap. How does it warrant the price $$$$$$.

This, next to RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY, is my favorite Peckinpah film. Decent print. We all convened afterward and agreed how effective the score was. My wife in particular. One friend said as nice as this is on video this only really becomes powerful on the big screen.

Unfortunately, for the first time ever at the Autry, the introduction sucked. Where is Jon Burlingame when you need him?

Turner Classic Movies showed it in HD many months ago. I hadn't seen it in years and very much enjoyed it.

I was lucky to work as an extra on INNERSPACE and THE SECOND CIVIL WAR where I got to spend some time chatting with director Joe Dante. When we talked about Goldsmith he told me that THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE was always one of his All-time Favorite Jerry Goldsmith scores. On the SECOND CIVIL WAR Location set out at Teton Ranch I remember THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS had just been released and Joe shared that he enjoyed that score as well. I also remember him saying how he thought in the TWILIGHT ZONE Movie he got the least impressive score for his episode from Jerry. I always admired Joe for his candidness and friendly conversation whenever we spoke.

As far as THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE Goldsmith score, it's not one of my favorites from him, but I like parts of it and the Main TOMORROW Theme.

Wow, that is so nuts. I thought he nailed every episode in that film. Though I guess I would agree that his score for that sequence is my least favourite, but I think still works perfectly with the images. I love to hear candid comments like that from directors, and would love to hear more about why Dante thought it didn't measure up to what he wanted....but that was one of those beautiful Zooba moments, so we'll likely never know...

Just a story....

...when I got the cassette from STAR (I think it was) paired with either The Other or Seconds, yeeeeeears ago (terrible transfers from???, but thank God we had something), I played it with my friends and they thought it was the funniest thing they'd ever heard. "Tomorrow Is The Song I Sing" became a bit of a joke when I included it in a cassette mix whenever we'd be out and about....but there was something about it, that was pretty awesome. And along with the Bandolero Main Title, which became a legendary tune for all of us, The Ballad Of Cable Hogue was a memorable flick, though none of us had seen it, nor knew anything about it.

Perhaps I should have prefaced this with the comment that we were growing up in Northern Canada at the timebig grin

Awesome. My affection for BALLAD really showed when I first had a mini-concert of Goldsmith/Bernstein songs in my back yard. There didn't seem to be any sheet music in the known universe. But I wanted this by hook or crook so my arranger Tom Griep had a takedown done of it.

And it here it is at the 40:00 minute mark with an instrumental of RIO CONCHOS and BANDOLERO song just before at 33:00. This defines where my passion lies.
