In the five James Bond films that featured John Barry's other theme for Bond "007" ("From Russia With Love", "Thunderball", "You Only Live Twice", "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Moonraker") which your favorite from among them? Mine would be the the one that introduced the theme ("From Russia With Love").

Yeah. FRWL. Thunderball was OK.

The brilliant variations in Thunderball climaxing with Underwater Mayhem/Largo's Death, bombastic adrenaline filled excellence.

The "sleepy" version in Moonraker is the least of the versions IMO.

The best ones ("Street Chase" and "Death of Largo") are both from Thunderball so I guess that wins.

That said... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dds5f_xr3j4 =)

"Moonraker" is THE James Bond no one has to appologise for liking it. It only gets more fun and glorious with each year.

"James Bond. You appear with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season."

Not my favorite Bond (although it was my first) but by far my favorite Bond villain. With THE best lines.

My favorite is the version from "Diamonds are Forever", especially the extended version on the 2003 re-mastered release. It's just so fully orchestrated, with a really full bottom end sound.

Runners up would be "You Only Live Twice" and "From Russia with Love".

Love the version in You Only Live Twice.

The motorboat chase in Moonraker, however, gets my nomination for the worst scored action sequence in any Bond movie. It's just terrible and totally out of step with what is happening on screen. If you heard the cue independent of the visuals, without ever having seen the film, you would never guess this music was for an action scene. Just terrible.

Agreed. I know Barry had this thing where he liked to "Score against the action", but I didn't get this choice at all, a really bizarre misstep in my opinion.

I agree that no one should be ashamed for liking Moonraker. I used to look down on it when I was younger, but I enjoy watching it immensely now, it never fails to cheer me up, in fact I've probably watched it more often than many of the 'better' Bonds. It has just as much a right to exist as the more serious Bonds in my view.

The score is mostly wonderful, but that version of 007 has never quite worked for me either set against that action scene. I guess Barry was by now well into his 'slower' mode of film scoring which he seemed to adopt around the mid- 70's. But he still usually managed to make his music work for whatever film he was scoring. But that slow version of 007 just sounds out of place to me...

Favourite version of 007?....I guess You Only Live Twice in terms of listening. Though I do love that bit in the underwater battle of Thunderball when that grand version of the piece comes on and the screen is filled with frogmen doing battle.....a great musical moment.

Well thanks for asking, it got me to listen to all the versions to decide. Can I post preference in order? Yes I can!

1) From Russia with Love, still the leanest version and I knew it the best from my first album collection in the 70's.

2) You Only Live Twice - cause I always loved the little Nellie sequence. It's the ye olde British Barry Gray/Ron Goodwin version for me.

3) Thunderball - because of the just terrific extension/variation, which nevertheless I never miss when I don't hear it.

4) Diamonds Are Forever - because there it is again!

5) Moonraker - down low, too slow. (But I don't mind, plays nicely after the Rio version of the theme on the album.)

Not my favorite Bond (although it was my first) but by far my favorite Bond villain. With THE best lines.

'You resist my attempts top provide you with an amusing death.'

I'm quite a fan of the more arch Bonds- MR, LALD, DAF

In the movie, this slower version works OK- but it does not survive a solo listen.

"Look after Mr. Bond. See that some harm comes to him. "

OK, I'm done now. smile

I'll have to go back and give You Only Live Twice a listen.

What an excellent question!

I think I pretty much like them all, but if I HAD to choose from the films for the full tune, it would be You Only Live Twice.

I remember hearing David Arnold saying that he was reluctant to use it as "you knew Bond would win". but that's b*ll*cks when you hear how it was used in Thunderball.

For a full orchestration, I think Roland Shaw's version is amazing.

Call me crazy but I have a very soft spot in my heart for "Bond '77" from THE SPY WHO LOVED ME.

A View to a Kill is my favorite Bond score, but the current release is so incomplete and has such harsh sound.

I guess I'd pick "The Living Daylights" excercise at Gibraltar.
