Jkannry nerfTractor and TheMutant, you do realize we are talking about The 007 Theme by John Barry?

It didn't appear in OHMSS, The Spy Who Loved Me, A View To A Kill or The Living Daylights.

Oops. Thought this was about the gunbarrel music.

Favorite use of the 007 theme would have to be Diamonds are Forever.

I kind of dig this version, by the John Barry Seven, kind of a weird hybrid of the original with some extra Vic Flick.

Of its five cinematic incarnations then I'd go for the original version in From Russia With Love (1963) as my favourite. The tune is adaptable but not so much as the James Bond Theme and I'm pleased it wasn't used throughout the series in the way other franchises use popular themes.

There are other threads discussing the theme's use in Moonraker and I agree that this is the least inspired arrangement but have no problem with it ... anything more vibrant, etc. would have been out of place.

Notwithstanding its earlier composition, Barry included an arrangement on the first of his 1960s' CBS/Columbia albums and this mirrored its arrangement for the then current JB007 release Thunderball (1965). He had recorded an earlier arrangement on the Ember label (1963) which was pop-orientated; and for its inclusion in the The James Bond Suite recorded for his first Polydor LP The Concert John Barry (1972) it became more symphonic.

As mentioned above, the arrangement by Roland Shaw (1964) is wonderful ... a real powerhouse in easy-listening, almost jazz form. Totally unsuitable for film scoring but a great stand-alone listen. I also like Franck Pourcel's 1973 arrangement (one of the best cuts on his album of JB007 themes), whilst Si Zentner's 1964 release is just a little too much. Next to Nic Raine's 1993 recording, Count Basie's 1966 recording is probably closest to the original in tempo, with the prominent piano accompanying the brass.

The Roland Shaw track is easily my favorite 007 Theme.

Not to mention "Goldfinger".

My favorite variation is Thunderball. I love the street chase and the finale. To me, that was that theme at its most exciting.

That said, it was always welcome to hear, except for Moonraker — in the film, that is. I don't mind hearing it on the album, but as has been discussed above, it is a questionable choice for the sequence.

Amusing that some people can't distinguish between the Bond theme & the 007 theme

Anyway Roland Shaw did a great cover version of this

Snap
I'd have to say 007 Takes the Lektor in FRWL and the variations of 007 in Thunderball. That said, Barry's version, recorded at the time of Thunderball, for his LP Great Movie Sounds of John Barry is really , for me, the definitive version.
As a kid, it was side one of this LP which provided amazing versions of all the Bond themes recorded up to 1965. Of course my LP credits the James Bond Theme itself to one John Barry. No mention of the other feller. In my view, very appropriate. But that's another theme and another story.

I think we have to remember that Moonraker was an attempt at a Sunday afternoon, fun for all the family, light entertainment kind of Bond film. One where the 4-year old sits on granny's lap and they both enjoy it while dad sleeps off the Sunday roast.

Not a direction I wanted Bond films to go, but they did.

Frankly, as the film goes on, it plays for laughs, not tension. It only allows itself genuine suspense at the beginning and at the end. In between, it's a fact paced light entertainment travelogue. I think anybody who reads the film or that boat chase as a serious action thriller piece is misreading the film.

I don't know whether Barry took his direction from Lewis Gilbert on what kind of music he wanted on that scene (I suspect he did) or whether he just knew it was too jarring to move so suddenly from a serious action music to that goofy, for laughs waterfall ending. (And it is.)

In short, much as I hate what that movie was, I support how that scene was scored.

But, because it was for light entertainment, it cannot be my favourite 007, no.

I think '007 Takes The Lektor' is the best version. The underwater versions in Thunderball are magnificent, but some pieces of music work better with the smaller orchestra and I think 007 is one of them.

Cheers

BTW, one of the better soundtrack moments in T2: Trainspotting is a montage scored to the Thunderball recording of "007", and is accompanied by Johnny Lee Miller remarking, "Isn't that a filthy bit o'music?"

I've been wondering, how did John Barry decide when to use this theme rather than the Bond theme?

Re-reading this thread, I had to remind myself of Roland Shaw's 007 cover, which is indeed a great one:

The Franck Pourcel seems kind of odd, almost lethargic, and towards the end drifting into a Midnight-Cowboy harmonica for a moment: https://open.spotify.com/track/1pSPfD5tilaFUPUgVNikoU

Johnny Pearson and his orchestra have quite a high-energy take: https://open.spotify.com/track/1BLq4fLgnUsOVP3aszBdrt

And then of course, Count Basie's take, which is fantastico!: https://open.spotify.com/search/results/count%20basie%20bond

My favourite James Bond Film of all time - is actually...

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN

However; "Moonraker" - is almost number #1.

I love everything about it. I have read in old movie reviews that it is: "the most ridiculous of the James Bond films"... (It does not bother me... because for me - it can be the definitive James Bond film... and yes; I prefer Roger Moore over Sean Connery).

Having said that... my favourite version of '007' - is - "Moonraker"...

...second spot goes to: "Diamonds Are Forever" -
...third spot goes to: "You Only Live Twice".
