Considering the sources and the disclaimers, I'm actually impressed positively by the quality of the audio clips. I had thought the suites would do it for me, but now I think I have to add this to the list. (But not this month, already done too much.)
You can thank for this album...YOURSELVES! It was maybe over a year ago on this board that The Heiress was discussed, with info as to the University of Texas library that had a tape of the acetates.
So I contacted the library and worked out a deal to get their master duped for Paramount and this CD released by Intrada. I also contacted Varese who kindly located their album master of The Red Pony (their license had long expired).
A MOST WELCOME vintage release. I'm supposing that the Intrada team made a deal and were given access to the acetates in the University of Texas archives in Austin, which (to my knowledge) are the only surviving elements of the score to THE HEIRESS.
This Oscar-winning score is released at last. Though I already had a very raw transfer CDR of those acetates from a most generous collector in Spain (of all places), I'm really interested to hear how much they could improve the raw sound.
Fantastic release. I really hope this is doing well for Intrada.
My order is in (along with Intrada's CHEYENNE AUTUMN and FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO / SO PROUDLY WE HAIL! and Kritzerland's THE RED BALLOON / LE VOYAGE EN BALLON... if that ain't something!!!).
Almost OT, but it's odd how the cover painting shows a woman who looks more like Joan Crawford than Olivia de Havilland (though they get Clift exactly right). Was Crawford ever considered for that role?
Wasn't as loud as when I found out about that Naxos Of Mice and Men/Our Town in time to get the download.
Now I might be able to realize just how good that Slatkin album was, without the twinge of disappointment that always resulted from only having suites.
Great news, my order is in! I've been wanting THE RED PONY newly mastered on a CD, now I'll have it along with THE HEIRESS. Thanks to Intrada and all involved!

Oh, and by the way: Thanks, Lukas!
A great deal of gratitude has to go to Lukas for pursuing that earlier thread that had him make contact with the University of Texas. Gratitude to the University of Texas and Varese Sarabande for making this release possible. To have both THE RED PONY and THE HEIRESS is a dream come true. Intrada continues to come up with major "golden age" scores. Thanks guys.

Thanks for your research Lukas. When fans are discussing certain film scores you never know what information might pop up that record labels might be able to use.
And thanks too for the wonderful Paramount Golden and Silver Age CDs you have produced in recent years. Please keep them coming best you can.

This is amazing Lukas. Film music (at least a portion of it) has gained a new fan - my husband who is a certified Copland fan. Thank you.
As I said in the other thread, this is the release of the YEAR, and we've hardly just begun. Incredible that this came about and major kudos to Chris Malone for his work on the sound!
Interestingly, I just read an old interview with the producer of the Naxos recording of Our Town / Of Mice and Men. Apparently he planned to record both The Red Pony and The Heiress next...a pity that never happened as it would have been amazing to get these two scores complete and in great sound, but getting the originals is still fantastic!
