I'm so very sorry if this has been brought up (probably has by mine own handle), but does anything have any insight or think we'll ever see a complete release of this kitsch score? Williams would certainly go on to greater scores (right after this one, as a matter of fact) but this one has a place in Cinema and music history too. I know Intrada is heavy in to 70s scores AND Universal...still you'd think there might've been a release by now. Wonder what John himself thinks...

Or is this in the same lifeboat as his own "Dracula"...

I hope so - I love this score, even, or especially, the muzak bits. That end title cue is so damned poignant, anything could have come before, and the score would still be aces. I don't know what's missing, aside from more brittle piano scoring for Marjoe Gortner & his badass fro, as heard in the TV version.

Bring it!
Sean

It needs to include the Main Title from the album as well as the actual film, along with everything between.

EARTHQUAKE has about 15 previous threads, including queries for expanded versions. Just type in 'earthquake' in the search engine in the upper, right corner.

Expansions are not my area of interest, but here's MY previous thread on film and score:

Thor, do you ever think about posts like the above?
Yes, let's all go searching for old threads to read Thor's disinterest in a new Earthquake cd!
Jesus. ...get some air, have a drink, or listen to a suite of something.

Nothing to "think" about. I'd rather link to a previous thread than to rewrite or copy/paste what I've already said in dozens of previous threads on the same topic. More time and energy-efficient, as I'm sure you understand!

Yeah… I don't know. Some existing threads are so long that they're sort of useless in that regard. Once a thread is three or four pages long (or longer), I don't think most of us go combing through the whole thing.

Besides, in real life, I have the same conversations over and over, so why not here?

No problem and thanks for the reminder! I'd love to have this as well. A great score by Mr. Williams.
A trivial question - do I remember correctly that when it was broadcast on TV in Sept '76 by NBC over two nights; additional scenes and all, was the end title ("The City Sleeps") done with in fugue style? I seem to recall that the 5-note motif was played as a fugue. Anyone?

Well, you don't have to 'comb through' the whole thing. If someone responds to the old thread, you can just go the last page and see the latest replies.

The only time a new thread bothers me is when there is an "old" one which is virtually identical on the same first few pages of the board, making it confusing. When the old one is languishing in the archives, collecting digital dust, the two threads don't get in the way of each other. Usually, within the old one, the conversation has grown stale, while a new thread can often become a "lively" conversation again (especially when years have passed).

Regarding "Earthquake": I'm open to any Williams expansions or remasters! I can do without that earthquake sound-effect at the end of the existing CD though....

Just curious, how is "Earthquake" any more "kitsch" than "Star Wars" or any of Williams' Spielberg scores?

"Miles on Wheels"?

Really like this score, and fond memories of seeing the film in Sensurround when it first came out. Not a great film, sadly, but in addition to the score it did have a couple of good points.

Why is "Earthquake" supposed to be kitsch and not great? Is this the foul stench of snobbery I smell?

...and don't forget the "Harry Potter" scores-- wink Sorry, I'm not trying to pick either, but a huge bulk of Williams' career has been scoring "pop culture-kitsch."

Love his "Earthquake" score and would love a comprehensive release. Hard to believe this one's such a hard mountain to climb, but if someone's got the rights in perpetuity...

I must have been confused or misunderstood. I LOVE this score. I meant that kitsch in the sense of it appeals to select individuals as it's very reflective of it's time, more like it's adjective of Kitschy.

Once again - I meant NO disrespect to the score. I think may have misspoken a bit. I adore this score and have been on the lookout for it for MANY YEARS since Intrada started their special collections series years ago. I would not call anything Williams did anything below brilliant and I CERTAINLY would never care to offend anyone or Williams himself with regards to the film or it's music. I love them both.

So sorry to have sparked a bit of conflict! I AM, however, very appreciative of the prompt responses and did not know there were that many threads that related to the subject at hand. I did disclaim in my original post that I understood there had been people who brought it up before.

My intention to re-post was an inquiry to the status of things - has anybody heard what's going on with the masters, any news on a label that owns the right, et al.

Thanks and carry on...

TP

It would indeed be such a delight to have both the original score as well as a remastered album in an ultimate "Earthquake" CD package.

There is much in the original score that is different from the album including a very different "Something for Remy" arrangement, music for the character Jody and a great cue right after the Big One hits and the SENSURROUND has stopped and the city is cracked and transformed.

If there were available extended original soundtrack cues including the Theme from Shaft kidding of "Miles on Wheels" and the third act "watching and waiting" suspense cues, that would be a treat.

It is fun to review the development of the Williams orchestral voice of that time with the earlier "Poseidon Adventure" and soon to follow "Towering Inferno" right before the resounding signature breakthrough of "Jaws".

So does anyone have an answer to the actual question?

The lengths of both Earthquake and Poseidon Adventure MTs are considerably shorter than the 5 minute wonder of Towering Inferno. The one thing which sets them all on the Williams track is the short, inventively mysterious machinations acting as precursor to the main body of the thematic music for each subject - one of the Williamsesque trademarks that set his work aside from the rest.
