If the movie is such crap, why didn't JW turn it down?

Because at the time it would have been a prestige movie, relatively speaking. It had a lot of names. The visual effects got an Oscar. It had that gimmicky sound effects system. Most importantly, it did convey something of what it might be like to depart from everyday normal living due to a natural disaster. I think my favorite character from the film would be George Kennedy's frustrated cop, and that scene involving Zsa Zsa Gabor's hedge.

That's my favorite part, too! :-)
In any case, as you said, at that time it would have been a prestige movie, and it secured John Williams one more step up the ladder to secure the A-List status of composers.

Also, Earthquake was a success, it was a box-office hit, and in Hollywood, that's what counts more than anything.

Last but not least, composers are part of the film making process and are often hired BEFORE the film is finished, before they KNOW if it's good or bad. It's hard to tell in advance.

"Hey, I'm going to make a movie about an alien gnome with a telescope neck who befriends a kid, they get drunk and ride bicycles, all the way up to the moon like the Batman logo. Anyway, the alien dies (or not) and wants to phone home. I need a composer. You're in?" There's no surefire way to KNOW in advance how good or successful a movie will be.

Just imagine trying to explain certain parts of 'Star Wars' to John Williams --- or anyone else for that matter --- before it was made. They'd probably look at you like you were completely bonkers. (Some people still do!) No wonder every studio but Fox said, "no"....

I've never seen this, but am somewhat interested now. Is it one of those "entertainingly fun, but bad" movies or is it just a terrible movie?

It has...Marjoe Gortner...Yikes!

Ava Gardner plays Lorne Greene's Daughter..in real life Ava is 3 years younger than Lorne.

Heston couldn't act his way in between the after shocks.

Bad Soap Opera with some matte paintings of destruction.

How Bad? At the end of the massive quake..goober dude with cigarette...lit..goes Back into his house to turn off..the Gas! What Next in this surprise comedy. ..Explosion. ..bet u all didnt see that coming?

Director Mark Robson...Was going to outdo..Irwin Allen..so he rips off Irwin Allen's The Posiedon Adventures...after the ship capsizes. .A passenger clings to a table. ..falls into the glass plain of light...
In EarthCrap...after 10 plus earthquake..bringing down tall bulidings with Albert Whitlock of ease...an whole side of a tall building falls to street surface..revealing a non broken glass object..but a man who slips to his death stories above the non broken glass structure, though tallConcrete buildings have swayed and broken apart. .but this unlucky man falls to his death...and through that strong ass glass! during a 10 plus earthquake...lol

Then these hapless Robson Trolls decide it would be 100% safe to enter a damaged UNDERGROUND PARKING GARAGE! What could happen...these non thinking Robson Actors...??? Another After Shock? Oh fucking No..Chuck and Ava and the rest of Robsons trolls. .get trapped. .who could foresee that happening?

After some 43 years later. ..wow I'm Old...i have not let go my great tetest and anger at this Universal Garbage.
