If the movie is such crap, why didn't JW turn it down? Because at the time it would have been a prestige movie, relatively speaking. It had a lot of names. The visual effects got an Oscar. It had that gimmicky sound effects system. Most importantly, it did convey something of what it might be like to depart from everyday normal living due to a natural disaster. I think my favorite character from the film would be George Kennedy's frustrated cop, and that scene involving Zsa Zsa Gabor's hedge. That's my favorite part, too! :-) In any case, as you said, at that time it would have been a prestige movie, and it secured John Williams one more step up the ladder to secure the A-List status of composers. Also, Earthquake was a success, it was a box-office hit, and in Hollywood, that's what counts more than anything. Last but not least, composers are part of the film making process and are often hired BEFORE the film is finished, before they KNOW if it's good or bad. It's hard to tell in advance. "Hey, I'm going to make a movie about an alien gnome with a telescope neck who befriends a kid, they get drunk and ride bicycles, all the way up to the moon like the Batman logo. Anyway, the alien dies (or not) and wants to phone home. I need a composer. You're in?" There's no surefire way to KNOW in advance how good or successful a movie will be.
