Thanks for that link, jackfu. Well worth spending time investigating (which I have yet to do in detail). The original link I gave still gives an "Error" message when clicking on the tickets bit (as TG mentioned), but the detailed info is on the new link. Ah, it's not 20 quid for the entire jobby, but 75. I'm now going to read through that new site.

Right then, I've just ploughed through the site that jackfu linked to. I'm absolutely amazed at the life and career of Basil Kirchin, and I think it's wonderful that Hull is putting this event together in recognition of his work. Such a diversity of events too, mirroring the wide-ranging ideas of Basil Kirchin himself. Mind-blowing. I'm just thinking back to my first exposure to Bazza's music. I must have been in my early teens, and THE SHUTTERED ROOM was on the telly. The music certainly didn't "fit" in a conventional way, but I was awestruck by it. Then I saw I START COUNTING and - at the cinema when I was still underage - THE MUTATIONS (which tracked in some soundscapes from the groundbreaking album "Worlds Within Worlds"). And I knew that this music wasn't coming from any old hack. I haven't had many experiences when I've thought immediately "genius" (this time I mean it), but hearing BK was one of them. The other was hearing Gil Mellé for the first time.

https://www.hull2017.co.uk/?s=basil+kirchin&x=13&y=10 Hi! Just giving this a wee bump for those interested. I me myself am very interested, but it's a bit too far up the road. Hope some of you other numbskulls make an effort. By the way, the above link (from jackfu's post) is the one you want. The one I gave in the first place doesn't seem to work, but you'll get all the info about ticket prices etc from the one above. Looks like PHIBES isn't actually getting a full orchestral accompaniement, but rather "live music from pianist, organist and composer Alexander Hawkins on the Hull City Hall pipe organ". The whole score on the pipe organ? Whatever it's like, I'm sure it'll be fascinating. Come to think of it, given the bitter outcome of Kirchin's involvement in the film (in which half his music was jettisoned and/or replaced), I'm sort of surprised they've chosen that one. But on the other hand, PHIBES is probably his "best", certainly most iconic film, and its cult status should draw the crowds more than say his more exciting, weird and jazzy scores for something like ASSIGNMENT K (in which Stephen Boyd is a spy who goes skiing a lot, or something like that). And if you don't go to see the good DR PHIBES, there's loads of other interesting Kirchinesque activities organised. Such was his brain. Loads to delve into. Let us know how it went, all ye who go!

Thanks so much for that, ukgroove! I "knew" (sort of) that the Beeb would be playing highlights after the fact, but I didn't know about the Thursday next week jobbies. I wonder if I'll be able to hear them here in Spain a few days afterwards... thinking back, sometimes I have been able to, other times I haven't. And right now (thanks for reminding me), ASSIGNMENT K is just about the best bloody score ever written! Doesn't matter if it doesn't "fit". Basil's brain was in a different universe from the sometimes humdrum or clichéd images he was scoring. You going to the gigs, uk?

i am a huge Basil Kirchin fan here in England. "Assignment K" blows away anything movie soundtrack-wise for me (Well, almost). The BBC Radio classical music channel is next week (Thurs.16 September) presenting an evening tribute to this outstanding composer http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08dns54 Hi Richie of ukgroove, and all interested parties. You're right in the middle of the Brilliantly Bonkers Bazza Bonanza over there in Hull. How's it going? Don't collapse the FSM Board with your reactions! So, last night was THE ABOMINABLE DR PHIBES. I'm still not sure if the entire film was accompanied by live music... somehow I doubt it, but you all must tell me. Lots of interesting (I'm sure) stuff still to come - performances, chats etc. Watch out for the great Jonny Trunk, St. Etienne's Bob Stanley, and Sean O'Hagan (Microdisney/The High Lllamas/Stereolab). The BBC Concert Orchestra is/was also involved, but I'm not sure how. You tell me, please. I've just heard the BBC Radio broadcast linked to above, and in some ways it was a little frustrating for a "square" film music knob-end like myself. Of course, I wanted to hear a biography of the great man, illustrated with lengthy tracks from his experimental albums and a lot of attention paid to his film scores. Well, that wasn't the nature of the beast, but once I got used to the approach I found most of it quite fascinating. There's no real Basil in the show until after the 35-min mark. A lot of the tracks played previously, supposedly with a Basil influence, bore very little relation to what I know of his music. Exceptions were Broadcast's "Minim" with its very Basil frantic bass, and Sean O'Hagan's direct tribute "Basil Pelynne", which was as if it had been written by BK himself, and was beautiful. The show does then highlight some music actually by Kirchin himself, along with snippets of fascinating interviews. I was already into the last half hour of the 90-min programme when I thought, "Hang on, this has got even less to do with BK's music and influence than the first 35 mins had". Then I realised that the Basil show had finished and I was listening to something else. Good indie music on that too though. All of you shall report to my office regarding the 3-day event. The deadline is Monday (because the bladdy thing doesn't finish until tomorrow). Any comments on the radio broadcast can be accepted before that time. Thank you.
