I love seeing the Nouveau Riche exposed for behaving like entitled jerks.

Author Dan Lyons in "Disrupted: My Misadventure in the Start-Up Bubble" talks all about his time working at the high-tech company Hubspot. Hubspot has consistently 1) had amazingly high revenues and 2) never shown a profit. They also have an internal culture that he describes as a cross between a frat house and Romper Room.

Some quotes:

One day part of the staff takes out time to make paintings for their offices. He photographs the results and shows it to his elementary-age kids at home. The kids laugh their heads off.

The next morning, the kids say goodbye to Lyons with "Bye, Daddy! Have fun at your kindergarten class today!"

***

"One plus one equals three" was an internal slogan for the company, indicating how magical some achievement is.

"One day Spinner, the woman who runs PR tells me, 'I like that idea, but I'm not sure that it's one-plus-one-equals-three enough.'

What does any of this nutty horseshit actually mean? I have no idea. I'm just amazed that hundreds of people can gobble up this malarkey and repeat it, with straight faces."

****

"This is the New Work, but really it is just a new twist on an old story, the one about labor being exploited... The difference is that this time the exploitation is done with a big smiley face."

Everything about this new workplace, from the crazy decor to the change-the-world rhetoric to the hero's journey mythology and the perks that are not really perks - all of these things exist for one reason, which is to drive down the cost of labor so that investors can maximize their return."

In another medium:

I'm looking forward to the dvd of "Silicon Valley", the HBO series by Mike Judge.

The dvd box says its about a place "where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success."

Any other examples of techies and start ups being their natural, clownish selves (without irony)?

The new Apple building has got its detractors, for good reason....

[One] specification requires that all doorways be perfectly flat without a threshold. A former construction manager said he spent months fighting against that because it would be a drain on resources.

Apple wouldn’t budge because “if engineers had to adjust their gait while entering the building, they risked distraction from their work.”

Insanity gone wild. This is the problem with the one percent having all the capital. Humongous waste of money for the sake of ego and vanity. Meanwhile their products are made in China by slave labor.

I heard the atmosphere at Microsoft is like "The Lord of the Flies", where it's department vs department and the only way to advance is to purposely take down your co-workers.

Everything that is being said here are ALL of the reasons why I sought out a home-based business, where I am able to control my environment (working in my jammies!), while earning WAY MORE than than all of those in the daily RAT-RACE.

LIFE IS GOOD!

I envy you and it's something I wish to achieve one day.

I wish someone would write a book about this. Lyons was able to write his book because he didn't have to sign a "non-disparagement" agreement. I wonder if that's why we aren't seeing any others like it.

Of course your right. Corporations are dictatorships.
