The impending demise of the IMDB posting forum has me wondering whether there might be other looming closures of old school posting boards in the face of the expanding reach of other social media options.
If anyone has their finger on the pulse of this special and specialized corner of the web, what's the near to long-term prognosis for the filmscoremonthly board?
Nothing's forever, but I hope the ol' FSM board has a good while left to host discussion about the arcane and mystical art of film music, among other things.
I recall F. Kendall, after he got out of the soundtrack business, saying that this board's "keep" would be maintained by the profits from the sales of the FSM cd's.
So, since those cd's are no longer in production, I would guess that this board would eventually no longer have support. Which makes me sad.
Well, he could starve that off in advance by offering paid accounts that come with some kind of benefit, and accept donations, and not wait until the last second of impending demise.
I don't have Facebook or MySpace or whatever else people do to occupy themselves these days.
We'll just have to have our meetings at the Mai-Kai, Onya.
Wow, Coop is back! Where have you been, Old Sport?
MySpace?! What century are you from?
Seriously, I don't know if "forums" are on life support or not. They serve a very different purpose than Facebook or Twitter. Social media sucks and is a wasteland of dribbling nonsense. "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy". I'll have nothing to do with it.
Which century? Let's just say that I largely "taper off" with pop culture around 1983. You can keep the rest of that shite.
Yeah, it was almost all downhill after the early 90's for me.
While it hasn't been the case with my (Gen X) generation, I believe that if a person hasn't sought out "new life, and new civilizations" in terms of films and music by the time they are 14 or so, they probably never will. The crap that was popular in the mid 1980s gave me culture shock, and I ran screaming from that stuff.
I don't see the demise of this board any time soon. My only annoyance is the periods where everything moves slow as molasses. That suggests to me that the powers-that-be certainly don't want to put any MORE money into it (a better server, more fluid interface etc.). But as I've said before -- if things get in a financial rut, Lukas can always ask the members to chip in, crowdfunder-style. I'd be willing to do that.
But SHOULD the board be disbanded at some point, I don't really see that as a big problem either. There will always be another board somewhere which everyone can migrate to, like we did in the year 2000 when this board went down and everyone went to moviemusic.com. I only hope I get the opportunity to save some of the stuff I've written here first.
Some years ago I mentioned paying for a faster, more-reliable board, which I would have no problem ponying up for, but some know-it-all wag said that such a move would kill the forum. Things have certainly changed in message board land since then, that's for sure.

Why would that kill the forum?
You'd have to ask that FSMer (whose name I forget--TerraEpon?), but I took it to mean that no one would pay for the pleasure of postng in this forum most fine.
This thread is sounding like another Radio Days roof moment, eh Mr. Phelps?
Does make you wonder if there is some sort of shelf life to this Internet forum business. Next month will mark nineteen years (at least) for me at this place. Thor and a few others can relate. Will save it for the anniversary thread. ANYWAY, we're pioneers if not a test group by default since we're talking Being There at the advent of the Net. Yeesh this is starting to sound depressing so let me bring some cheer by stating it's fine with me if I drop dead while posting. Just hope it's to a thread worthy of keeling over!

...so what is my monthly debit to FSM online going to then???
