Chandos Records has recorded the film music of many British film composers and they are wonderful. Why have they not been able to do the film compositions of Allan Gray. One score in particular I would like to see done is THE AFRICAN QUEEN.

Chandos has given us many excellent film score CDs over the years.

I would like to see Chandos do a Miklos Rozsa CD to his early British films. And of course CDs of Max Steiner, Victor Young, Alfred Newman, Hugo Friedhofer etc.

It is an excellent series, well worth your attention. I have almost all of them and I play them often.

A definite YES to your requests also. Chandos has done many British composers. Why have they omitted Allan Gray?

Philip Lane did create a short suite for African Queen on ASV ages ago
http://www.classical.net/music/recs/reviews/a/asv02142a.php

I think there is also a suite from Emil and the Detectives done on the radio also some time ago...

There are historic suites from a Matter of Life and Death and This Man is Mine that were recorded in the 40s but thats it, I think...

Chandos would propably do it if they find a sponsor for some more score restauration.

Another candidate for Chandos might be John Greenwood, especially his scores for the Maugham films Trio and Quartet. The Chandos series these days is nearly the only hope for Golden Age scores that fall outside of the action/epic/adventure category, and my great, ever-dimming hope is Rozsa's Lust for Life, the suite at least.

OK,there's two names now. I hope someone attached to Chandos Records will see this thread.

I think Niall should take the ferry from Dublin to London, and demand that Chandos give us these CDs we want! smile

Or maybe another Sir Malcolm Arnold collection or C.D.s devoted to Leith Stevens and Leigh Harline.

Frank Cordell? Raymond Leppard? More Clifton Parker.

As regards that Korda Rozsa, I'd doubt it, since (a) Chandos prefer an available suite, (b) the score Mss are lost, and (c) they're not representative of his most famous material, though a good 'Double Life' suite would be up their alley.

Yes, Harline, especially for They Live by Night and From This Day Forward.

My gratitude to Chandos is undying, but a certain What Have You Done For Me Lately feeling sometimes creeps over me when I see their classical offerings (much more conventional than they used to be); that and the ongoing non-inclusion of I See a Dark Stranger (a real gem) in the Alwyn series.

I've picked up many Chandos titles. With few (if any) exceptions, they are a label which can be trusted to turn out superb product. I always know their performances and production will be first-rate.

John Greenwood, a very good suggestion there are also some surviving manuscripts.

There should be enough manuscript material for a 3rd Malcolm Arnold disc.

A second Clifton Parker, John Addison or Alan Rawsthore would also be nice.

Benjamin Frankel has been served by other labels but there is so much material that hasn't been touched.

Some others to consider:
James Bernard, Humphrey Searle, Buxton Orr, Gerard Schurmann, Roberto Gerhard, Matyas Seiber, Richard Arnell, John Veale, Bernard Stevens, Franz Reizenstein, Liz Lutyens, Antony Hopkins (not the actor), Walter Goehr, Frank Cordell, Howard Blake and even Benjamin Britten!

Some might need to share a disc like Leighton Lucas and Arthur Benjamin because of limited number of scores or not enough manuscripts surviving, but still a lot to explore...

Any sponsors?

I agree up to a point ...........but am I the only person on the planet who finds that the recording levels are way off.......I am continually having to use the volume control handset as the highs are too high and the lows are way to low...........not just on this latest recording but on almost all of the previous releases............there is never a time I can fully listen to an even stable sound level without altering the volume level up and down.........

I bought the Ralph Vaughan Williams Collection (3 Disc Set) a few years ago. I found those CDs virtually unlistenable due to what you are saying - excessive high and excessive lows so that I had to constantly adjust the volume. Are all of the Chandos recordings like this? - if so I will avoid them.

quote: "Chandos has won many prestigious awards for its natural sound quality."

I think their sound is great, but some here seem to prefer a close miked approach, fair enough.

There should be enough manuscript material for a 3rd Malcolm Arnold disc.

That could include finally a good sounding recording of music from The Heroes of Telemark. A concert version of the march would be great.

Absolutely. The manuscript is at Sony/Columbia I believe.

Or how about a C.D. devoted to Brian Easdale?

Or maybe a suite devoted to "The Thin Red Line"?
