Now, I completely disagree with you about Ice Station Zebra...What on earth gave you that idea, Onya?

I saw the film both before and after I had the CD (which I love, incidentally), though a long time apart. Both times, it sounded like there was music playing that was intended for other parts. But I can't remember where or when (to quote Larry Hart). Also, I think the grandiose music that plays when they show the submarine is a little over the top. But I do like the music, and I also have the LP.

If I see the film again anytime soon - and I think I may have taped it off of TCM - I will review my former opinion.

Interesting. The first shot of Tigerfish is during the night departure. It is in the middle of the cue starting with Jones' first appearance I mentioned above. There is a dramatic statement as we see the sub's conning tower wrapped in a blue-grey sort of mist and a trilling flourish as Jones shows his Id/pass at the checkpoint to the American block. As for the dive/surface music, it is kind of grandiose, but it's also saying something about man's mastery of the sea. Back in '69, audiences were being reminded this is a nuclear boat. At that time stories of the feats performed by USS Nautilus (SSN-571), such as the first underwater traversal of the north pole, perpetuated her fame. It's no surprise Legrand shrouded Tigerfish with such an air of grace and prestige, for she was Nautilus in every way but name.
