If being a huge Ray Harryhausen fan makes me a nerd and a geek, then I shall wear both badges with great honor!

Warner Archive has confirmed that it will release on Blu-ray director Jim O'Connolly's film The Valley of Gwangi (1969), starring James Franciscus, Gila Golan, Richard Carlson, Laurence Naismith, and Freda Jackson. The release will be available for purchase later this year.

Synopsis: The discovery of a midget horse, thought to be fifty million years old, prompts members of a Wild West show to venture into Mexico's Forbidden Valley in search of fame and untold wealth. But they are met by prehistoric monsters, including "Gwangi," a giant dinosaur that decimates their ranks.

Special Features:
Return to the Valley featurette with SFX wizard Ray Harryhausen
Theatrical Trailer
Optional English SDH subtitles

Wonderful! Can’t wait for this!
A very enjoyable film with great scenery, colors, memorable and fun if somewhat stereotypical characters and a great score by Moross.
It has some of Harryhausen’s best work, with great details, color and lifelike movements.
Gwangi’s noises were great, too. The low, guttural, gurgling growl reverberating in the cathedral was chilling.
I remember seeing this as a child and thinking sadly “What a miserable way to go!” and was even moved by Gwangi’s fate.
Gwangi is even somewhat a sympathetic creature. My only negative is the circus/elephant stuff, I thought it detracted even though it was central to the plot.
So, it’s "King Kong" in the wild west, I’m okay with that. Definitely will pre-order.
Thanks for the update!

While we wait for this release, how about some discussion on the "other" star of this movie, the now extinct James Franciscus.

A good actor, or a very wooden one. I know he has some fans, but I've never been one of them. He was okay to look at, I guess, but his acting range wasn't very great.

I think/thought he's perfectly fine. For acting chops, I presume he did as he was directed.
Damn handsome devil, too.

Did you know he busted Jane Fonda's "cherry"? She said as much in her autobiography. They knew each other in college.

He must not have thought much of himself, though. He literally smoked himself to death. A tragic figure really.

It's just what people of that era did--smoke and copulate.

Funnily enough, The Missus always says that he was too pretty to be straight.
Of course, she only really remembers him in his loincloth from BTPOTA.
(Went out like a friggin' hero in that one, he did.)

Did you know he re-wrote the majority of his dialogue in Beneath the Planet of the Apes? As revealed in the superb book Planet of the Apes Revisted - an exceptional book.

Yes, I did know that. He and Ted Post worked on it.

As for that book, I know one of the authors. We were pen pals back in the days of "Famous Monsters of Filmland" in the mid-seventies.

By the way, back then my mother would make fun of Franciscus, too, because she also thought he was probably "queer." Actually, far from it from what I've heard.

And BTW, Franciscus was a four-pack-a-day cigarette smoker. That was slow suicide there.

Wish they had a music-only channel for Leith Stevens' World Without End.

I was always a fan of James Franciscus. Thought he was a pleasant, natural actor.
