FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24

THEIR FINEST---trailer released for the World War II movie about British filmmakers who make a movie to boost national morale during the Battle of Britain. Gemma Arterton, Bill Nighy and Sam Claflin star.

THE BATMAN---Warner Bros. announced that Matt Reeves (DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) will direct the movie to replace Ben Affleck. Affleck tweeted, "Welcome to the Batcave, @MattReevesLA".

THE WALKING DEAD---Jeffrey Dean Morgan tweeted his comment about the Negan T-shirt being dropped by British retailer Primark after complaints that the T-shirt was racist, "Holy crap people are stupid."
The t-shirt uses the first part of Negan's line from the show, "Eeny Meeny Miny Moe", but not his second line, "Catch a tiger by the toe." The original version of the rhyme uses the N-word instead of "tiger" which led to the complaints.
An online petition requesting that Primark bring back the Negan T-shirt has been started.

JAMES BOND---Naomie Harris (Miss Moneypenny) said Daniel Craig will probably return for the 25th Bond movie, “I think there’s a very good chance that Daniel will come back. I think it’s way too early to be thinking about other people at this stage… I think the fact that the last two Bonds – SPECTRE and SKYFALL – have been the highest-grossing Bond movies of all time shows that people love him as Bond, and they desperately want him to return. And I don’t think Daniel is immune to that…But he has to ultimately do what feels right to him. But I know that we, as a cast, collectively want him back. I know that Barbara and Michael – our producers – desperately want him back, so I think the only person that needs persuading is Daniel.”

MARTIN SCORSESE---the director thinks the theater is the best place to watch a movie. Ironically, Netflix picked up his latest movie, THE IRISHMAN. That aside, Scorsese, said, “The problem now is that it is everything around the frame that is distracting. Now you can see a film on an iPad. You might be able to push it closer to your [face] in your bedroom, just lock the door and look at it if you can but I do find just glimpsing stuff here or there, even watching a film at home on a big-screen TV, there is still stuff around the room. There’s a phone that rings. People go by. It is not the best way.”

SIX---History renewed the SEAL series starring Walton Goggins for Season 2.

NIGHTWING---Chris McKay (THE BATMAN LEGO MOVIE) is in negotiations to direct the Warner Bros. live-action movie based on the DC Comics superhero.

TOMORROW TOMORROW---Matt Ross (CAPTAIN FANTASTIC) will direct the sci fi movie based on the novel.

FLARSKY---Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron star in this comedy movie about a hapless journalist who seeks to romance his childhood crush, his former babysitter, who is now one of the world's most powerful women.

KATRINA: AMERICAN CRIME STORY---Matthew Broderick will play FEMA head Michael Brown in the FX crime anthology series. Annette Being will play Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco.

MAYANS MC---JD Pardo will play the lead character of Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes in the SONS OF ANARCHY spinoff series.

I read the Naomi Harris quote elsewhere, earlier today. I think Craig has at least one more Bond in there. I don't know if this is true for someone like Connery, for instance, but Craig has been chipping away at the character for long enough that he seems comfortable in the 007 suit. By this I mean Connery fit the role instantly, whereas Craig has had to run counter to the Bond stereotype for several movies in order to get settled in.

I've been chipping away at SPECTRE, in the sense I've watched it quite a few times. There are problems, such as the monotonous color dredged imagery, which detracts from the notion it is a film and not some car commercial. It was very theatrical to combine all the previous Craig Bonds into one continuous projection by relating all the top bad guy figures as underlings to Oberhauser from the start. Mendes got back to destroying the villain's lair, even going so far as to enter the Guinness Book Of Records with the resultant huge explosion, yet it's over in one take and is rather static - it's got no sense of action whatsoever. There's another big bang when the MI6 HQ is also raised to the ground. Major events seem to fall flat because the old style of buttressing such scenes has given way to a strangely uninvolved method of presentation. The fight on the train is not definitive. It's not that there is no action in the film, it just feels like there isn't as much as there used to be, once upon a time - Bond needs plenty of all round color. I also gave License To Kill another view, recently, and my estimation of it went up despite the fact it too has some points that detract from it - that it was filmed in real film gives it a great deal of zest. There were two women in it, as with SPECTRE. However, they played off against one another quite well, whereas Monica Bellucci was done away with a convenient "buona fortuna" throwaway comment almost from the start - some say this was a reference to Malena. She was just a temporary tag to the pre-title sequence and the excuse for pointing Bond to the Rome group meeting - very underwhelming.

That's not to say there are things not to like about Spectre. For all the above I can watch it again because the level of story detail is quite involving. There's a lot of subtlety in there too. Maybe a Bond film needs to be a little less subtle.

Scorsese is now an old curmudgeon too.

But really, is it any better in what passes for a theatre these days? If by the time you get to the movie itself and your ears aren't bleeding from the volume of the sound during the trailers, there's always that distraction of some dirt or Coke stain on the middle of the image, and what's with always putting those red exit signs next to the screen? When the red glow from them bleeds into the picture, it reminds you of that old CRT TV you once had that needed degaussing in one corner?

Never knew that. Learn something new every day. @ Rory, did I use "knew" and "new" correctly? wink

If Ben's happy, then I'm happy. wink I'm cautiously optimistic and looking forward to THE BATMAN.
