That LP presentation is how it should have been packaged when the original vinyl was distributed to the public - I'm pretty sure I'd have hunkered up to it. You could tell even then it's a pretty heavy-duty track listing.

I still don't understand that why anyone would want a vinyl version if there is a perfectly good pop- and his-free alternative available but I sure wish for La-La to make a fat profit on this so they are motivated to continue their spectacular releases like the ST-TAS and Johny Quest. Good deeds deserve to be rewarded well.

You know these things don't come with "pops" from the factory right? Same way CDs don't come already scratched.

YOUR NAME IS DISCO STU

I'm picturing in my mind Disco Stu wearing his lime green leisure suit and about 7 gold chains around his neck, shirt opened low to see that hairy chest, spinning those Gloria Gaynor and The Hues Corporation CD's. Vinyl is alive, DS, VINYL IS ALIVE.

For anyone who does get this, can you say a word about the booklet? It looks fabulous.

I've no intention of playing an LP again (which is not to diss LP releases, just the way it is for me). And I didn't ever expect to be swayed by the collector's value of these admittedly cool packages being released. But once I saw the picture of all the elements, that booklet pretty much cried out to me. So I'm astonishing myself and actually thinking of picking this up, if others confirm its dandiness. (The only problem is I assume its content is derived from the CD booklet...?)

Thanks, LaLaLand! I'm listening to my discs now, and I'm more than happy. The packaging is beautiful, and the discs themselves are well-pressed -- flat, quiet, and sonically pleasing! Vinyl quality can be a bit of a crapshoot these days, but LLL came through with flying colors on this release!

(And I'm sure the booklet is cribbed from the CD [I haven't compared], but it sure looks better to these old eyes in a 12x12 format.)

As I recall this music was originally recorded digitally. If so, what is the technical advantage of converting it to an analog LP?

I understand the logic of people who prefer LPs when the source material is analog. Please explain.

The LLL album was mixed and mastered at 192kHz/24-bit, after having been transferred from the original 2" analog tapes. I assume this was used to master the vinyl version. CD resolution is only 44.1kHz/16-bit.

As far as the original recording goes, someone else is going to have to give the details. I seem to remember that it was recorded both digitally and in analog at the same time as a safety precaution. Judging from the credits, I assume this album used the analog tapes.

Actually, the score was recorded in analog tape, and a couple were simultaneously recorded digitally.

The masters from which this LP were struck are from a 24-bit high res transfer from the 2 inch 16 track analog recordings of the entire sessions.

BTW, only 15 tracks contained music, the 16th contained a 60 Hz tone used to adjust playback speed accurately for the tapes.

Then Bruce Botnick worked with Michael Matessino and a little assistance from Neil S. Bulk and others to produce the polished mix for LLLR's 3 disc release, and then this release.

This is likely the best this score will ever sound, and if the CDs are any indication, it sounds amazing.

Hope to see this in person at WonderCon.

NOTE: Updated for corrections.

Digital in 1979 WAS 44k 16bit and it could only record 2-channel stereo.

A handful of cues for TMP were recorded digitally for the album as live mixes. At one point the union got after Bruce Botnick (who was the CBS Records producer assigned to project and on the cutting edge of digital recording) and made him stop because the musicians were not yet grasping that the music was not being replaced by something else. It was the dark ages. In the end some of the live stereo analog mixes were recorded to digital tape and then the 1979 LPs were made from that, so from the very beginning the release was sourced from both digital and analog.

Of course, the project led Bruce to beginning his relationship with Jerry Goldsmith and his first film as scoring engineer was Twilight Zone: The Movie although he was on hand for most of what came in between as album producer and/or digital recordist. The partnership lasted 25 years as we all know.

For the LLL CD, we transferred every inch of the TMP multi-channel scoring masters at 192k 24bit. I then assembled and prepped the score, and then Bruce did a brand new mix. We output at that resolution right off the same hard drive the tapes were transferred to, so it was inarguably lossless in every way. The main score program from the CD is what is on vinyl and Bruce personally supervised the lacquer cutting and test pressing process.
