FRIDAY, MARCH 17

STAR WARS---writer Gary Whitta (ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY) said future movies will focus on new characters, "I think you’ve already seen us get 90% of the way there with ROGUE ONE. Yes you see Leia, yes you see the Death Star and Vader, because those are elements of that story and they belong there, you can’t tell that story without those characters. But for the most part, 90% of that story is completely new characters. Completely new planets and places you’ve never seen before. It’s a Star Wars movie with no Jedi! You don’t see a lightsaber once until Vader pops it out at the end. It doesn’t have any spirituality or mysticism… a little bit through Donnie’s character, but it’s very different DNA to the Star Wars films that have come before it. I really like the fact that we tried to do something different. The next spin-off is ‘Han Solo,’ that’s another familiar character, but I think increasingly you’re going to see… One of the thing things we really want to do at Lucasfilm is create a universe and not keep relying on old legacy characters. We’ve got Rey and Finn and Kylo Ren, they’ve already introduced a new generation of characters. Whatever kind of Star Wars films they’re making 10 or 20 years from now, I don’t think they’re going to be relying on the same legacy story elements as we have in the past."

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY---director Gareth Edwards commented on a key reshoot which involved Darth Vader, "He arrives and obliterates the Calamari ship, and then the blockade runner gets out just in time and he pursues the blockade runner. And then Jabez [editor Jabez Olssen] was like, ‘I think we need to get Darth on that ship,’ and I thought, yeah, that’s a brilliant idea and would love to do it, but there’s no way they’re going to let us do it. It’s a big number and we had, what, like 3 or 4 months before release.
Kathy [Kennedy] came in and Jabez thought, f*ck it, and pitched her this idea, and she loved it. Suddenly within a week or two we were at Pinewood shooting that scene. [They] came up with a whole shopping list of ideas. 70% we used, and maybe 30% felt a little too extreme. They were things you hadn’t seen him do before…
It just felt right; it felt like the right thing to do. It really is just the greatest hits of Darth; that corridor. And we really didn’t want to do anything you haven’t seen him do so it didn’t throw people off. We kept it to what had been established.”

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 6---Henry Cavill (MAN OF STEEL) will co-star in the sequel. Sources say Cavill will play the right hand man to the head of IMF.

VENOM---Sony Pictures announced it will release a Venom movie on October 5, 2018. Scott Rosenberg (JUMANJI) and Jeff Pinkner (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN-2) will write the script.

FREAKSHIFT---Alicia Vikander (EX MACHINA) is in talks to star in this sci fi action movie about a government team of misfits who battle underground monsters who emerge at night. Ben Wheatley (HIGH RISE, FREE FIRE) is the director/co-writer.

THE BATMAN---a source said one of the reasons the sequel was delayed to 2018 is because the script is being rewritten from scratch.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST---an inside source said Walt Disney Pictures might develop a sequel to the Emma Watson remake movie, "With the expected monster opening of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and the excitement that has surrounded the film they are already considering a sequel to be released around 2019 or 2020. They want everyone back for an original story. It is the next phase of what Disney would like to do with their live-action sequels to their animated classics."

RAMPAGE---Malin Akerman (WATCHMEN) is in negotiations to play the villain in the Dwayne Johnson monster movie based on the arcade game.

THE FORCE---James Mangold (LOGAN) will direct this 20th Century Fox movie based on the upcoming novel about an NYPD detective who leads an elite special unit, "Denny Malone is dirty: he and his partners have stolen millions of dollars in drugs and cash in the wake of the biggest heroin bust in the city’s history. Now Malone is caught in a trap and being squeezed by the Feds, and he must walk the thin line between betraying his brothers and partners, the Job, his family, and the woman he loves, trying to survive, body and soul, while the city teeters on the brink of a racial conflagration that could destroy them all."

WAR PARTY---Tom Hardy stars in this Netflix movie based on the true story of a SEAL team and their dangerous missions. Andrew Dominik (THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD) is the director/co-writer.

THE STAND OFF---Netflix movie underway about the 1969 incident in which the LAPD SWAT team raids the Black Panthers headquarters. Justin Lin is the director.

ZERO K---FX miniseries underway based on the novel about an aging billionaire and his younger wife who have their bodies preserved until future technology can extend their lives.

FANTASTIC FOUR---Mads Mikkelsen said he walked out of the audition for the 2015 Josh Trank reboot movie, "I think I walked out on the FANTASTIC FOUR one. I think I actually said, 'I can’t do it. It’s not about you, I’m sorry, this is wrong.'” Apparently, he auditioned for the Dr. Reed Richards role and left when he was told to “extend his arms like a rubber man.”

GAME OF THRONES---director Matt Shakman described the dragons in Season 7, “The dragons this year are the size of 747s. Drogon is the biggest of the bunch — his flame is 30-feet in diameter!” This translates to 230 feet long and a 210 foot wingspan.

SYFY---Syfy renewed THE EXPANSE for Season 3 and 12 MONKEYS for Season 4 which will be the last season.

JACK RYAN---Timothy Hutton (ORDINARY PEOPLE) will have a recurring role as the CIA Deputy Director of Operations on the Amazon series based on the Tom Clancy novels.

POSE---new FX/Ryan Murphy series set in 1986 New York "...examines the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York City: the emergence of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world.”

Way to go, Cavill! Now all we need is for Chris Evans to land another franchise role. wink

THE BATMAN---a source said one of the reasons the sequel was delayed to 2018 is because the script is being rewritten from scratch.

I'm sure it's for the best; maybe the (now-scrapped) script was why Ben wanted out?

And you succeeded in creating a senseless elaborate scene that felt tacked. Mission accomplished!

I thought the scene was the perfect crank-up to 11 that made a pants-shitting finale. It was great to see how close the rebels were to losing the data right when they received it, then watch it passed from officer to officer until it wound up with Leia, Vader in hot pursuit.

Agreed. The audience I saw it with loved it. And everyone I was with thought it was one of the best scenes in an overall pretty good/enjoyable film.

Glad you loved it but when has Darth ever lead the charge? Never in the other films. The Stormtroopers are always the front line and Darth comes in when it's clear. It makes the beginning of New Hope even more pointless.

I see what you're saying, Solium. But there are even more inconsistencies between A NEW HOPE and EMPIRE that bug me a lot more than a minor one like that. Doesn't really stop my overall enjoyment of the films as a whole though...

I'm a big fan of the M:I movies - the last 2 in particular I thought were fantastic.

But Cavill.... god, can't stand the guy. He is so incredibly wooden. He is a dreadful Superman and an awful Napoleaon Solo. Seriously, this guy ranks up there with Daniel Craig for having zero charisma and acting skill.

So rather disappointed he is going the franchise, especially if he is going to be on Ethan Hunt's side.

Cavill's casting also suggests the excellent Jeremy Renner will have an even smaller role in the next one than he did in Rogue Nation, which is a huge shame.

I may be misremembering, but I am pretty sure Darth Vader led the charge of stormtroopers through Echo Base during Empire Strikes Back once the walkers had taken the shield down and arrived at the actual base. Darth Vader also led the charge on the Jedi Temple in Revenge of the Sith. He doesn't always lead the charge, of course, much like he doesn't always hop into a TIE fighter and fly against the Rebels, but there are examples of him doing both.

In your opinion, of course. In my opinion--because opinions vary...Cavill and Craig are the best things to happen to their characters since Reeve and Connery, respectively. smile

He's the Marshal Ney of the Empire, even if he isn't a republican, or a redhead.

I read that Cavill was the top candidate to replace Pierce Brosnan as the next James Bond, but he was considered too young, so the job was given to the #2 candidate, Daniel Craig.
Since Craig had made comments about not returning, Cavill's name was never on the list of possible replacements---even though he's about a decade older. It would appear that if Cavill was #1 a decade ago but too young, then the the problem would no longer be a factor, and Cavill would be #1 again.
I've only seen Cavill once---in THE MAN FROM UNCLE, which I thought was a lousy movie, so I can't judge his acting based on one bad movie.
