So, what does C-R-U-S-I-N-G mean?

One night, back in my closeted days, I was in a bar in New York called the Ramrod, when a man burst in, and exhorted all of us to come with him and demonstrate against the film crew shooting CRUISING only a few blocks away. Shooting was constantly being interrupted by loud demonstrators, who had learned from advance notices that the film would show a discriminatory view of gays and gay life.
They were right; the film presents gay sexuality as a kind of disease that can be "caught," as presented by the Pacino character, who seems to "convert" from straight to gay during the course of the story. Which is surprising since Friedkin also directed THE BOYS IN THE BAND, a much more empathetic view, a decade or so before.
The good news is that CRUISING was a tremendous flop when it opened, and helped diminish Friedkin's career.
It belongs to the pre-AIDS mentality, when gay men were shown as either drag queens or leathermen.
Nevertheless, especially for gruesome violence, I still find the film repellant.
