Someone I know quite well is considering joining the board and asked me whether there are some game music fans here. I know I have seen quite a bit of discussion here. Thoughts?

Always been a big fan of VGM, wish there were more labels willing to release the stuff here in the states.

I can't claim to be a huge game music fan, but I've certainly enjoyed several scores very much - Giacchino's are always good value, and I've picked up a couple of Bond Game scores that have had regular plays. The chap who introduced me to a number of really good scores beyond the above is our very own Warlock. You reading this, War?

Streets of Rage. 1/2/3/ Capcom label, or Mars Colony, or Alpha. composer, Yuzo Koshiro.

Dead Rising. 1/2, Capcom label, or sumthing else, Composers, Marika Suzuki & Oleska Lozowchuk.

The Super Shinobi, & the Revenge of Shinobi, Alpha label. Yuzo Koshiro.

Resident Evil, Boxset 6 cds. Capcom or Mars Colony. composer, Masami Ueda.

Castlevania, 1/2/3/4/ label, Konami Kukeiha Club, composed also by Konami Kukeiha Club.

Silent Hill, 1/2/3/4/ label, Konami Kukieha Club, composer, Akira Yamaoka.

This is some of the greatest retro game/music, from the late eighties to early nineties.

I haven't really played a videogame since I was a kid/teenager (with the exception of some Telltale games in later years which are basically molded on the ol' 90s point-and-click games anyway), but there's some great music out there. And some not so much. I tend to veer more towards the "alternative" scores -- electronic, chamber ensemble, pop-infused etc. The big and bombastic, orchestral action game scores don't do much for me.

Interestingly, I just completely a massive survey on Norwegian game music for a music organization over here. I definitely learned something about the mechanics of it in the process.

If you like electronic music+chamber give Yuzo Koshiro a try, Streets of rage is a classic score parts 1,2,3, it has been reviewed buy game editor's before, they reckon its one of the best all time game scores. Yuzo Koshiro is a skilled composer.
