Wow, this came out of nowhere for me:

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/mar/06/steven-spielberg-pentagon-papers-film-tom-hanks-meryl-streep

Does this mean we'll get a score by Maestro Williams this year? I honestly have to say that I'd love him to go for a small, sparsely spotted score for this one. It sounds like it would be a project that Thomas Newman might also provide a fitting sound for, but I'd love another 20th century period picture scored by John Williams.

Variety reports this as well and even bases a long article about politically relevant films on it, so my hopes are rather high this is correct.

This news is a couple of weeks old by now.

I have no particular high hopes for this, as I generally do not enjoy journalistic/investigative dramas, but I'm hoping my favourite director can turn it into something worthwhile.

Oh really? And the announcement of a new Spielberg film, probably coupled with a new Williams score coming out within the next nine months doesn't elicit a post in this forum anymore? Things have changed...

OP...

You must visit IMDB. Place this name in Steven Spielberg. Variety and The Hollywood Reporter covered this also.

Ok Thanks for playing...you are late for lunch.

There will be a Williams score out this year..but not The Post. Some lil known film called Star Wars.

The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara is also on the horizon.

And don't forget....Ready Player One will be released with some John Williams Music March of 2018.

Thanks for reminding me why I don't come here very often anymore.

Yes, I heard this recently but wondered how/when Spielberg would fit it in between Ready Player One (due early 2018), the kidnapping film AND Indiana Jones 5.
But if they can all feature a new John Williams score, bring'em on I say. smile

"The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara" is likely to be pushed back. It seems like "The Post," a spec script that found its way to Spielberg and feels politically relevant right now, has come together quickly, while reportedly Spielberg has been struggling to find a young boy to cast in the title role of "Mortara."

I enjoyed "Spotlight" quite a lot, and when re-watching "Munich" recently, it reminded me how elegantly and well Spielberg can direct dialogue-driven suspense. In addition, he really created the period amazingly through production design, camera, and lighting. So my hopes are high for the combination that "The Post" promises.
Also, I love that he sees himself capable of making "small" films quickly. And last but not least, he continues to explore new genres. Taken all of this together makes me quite excited for this project. And I think given that this will require not much music, chances seem high for Williams to fit this into his schedule. If he'd take the setting of the film in the seventies as a point of departure for his own musical approach, this could become, to me at least, and no matter how short the final score would be, a more exciting project than "Ready Player One".

I didn't care for SPOTLIGHT at all.

But I agree with Gunnar that Spielberg can do wonders with dialogue- and information-heavy material. He's proven that as recently as LINCOLN and BRIDGE OF SPIES. So that's why I'm holding out hope for this, even if it's a genre I do not care for.

In that case, I can understand your reservation toward this project.

It's just an issue I have with this particular genre. I didn't really care for ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN either (sacrilege, I know).

I actually love digging/fact-finding/investigate type films from yesteryear (All The Presidents Men, Parallax View, 3 Days Of The Condor etc) and beyond, so this combination from Spielberg and Williams would be right up my alley.

Interesting, I was beginning to find curious that we had no word on "Mortara" supposedly aimed at a fall release (Spielberg is super fast but still..). Now the Variety article still says
“The Post” is scheduled to begin shooting in May and to be released later on this year, even as Spielberg is in the midst of post-production on his dystopian climate-change sci-fi epic, “Ready Player One,” and has had to push back another project he’s already at work on, “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara” "

I'll be with the others saying that anything that keeps John Williams filmusic-busy is fine by me, and it will be a welcome change between huge projects for Williams. We might even have a "Catch me if you can" level kind of surprise here.

This is what I also thought as a possible approach: Jazzy, but more suspenseful and with less playfulness.

The circumstances remind me a bit of "Wag the Dog", which turned out to be a real gem as film and in terms of its music.
