All the recent female heroes are tomboys. (Katniss, Rey, Jyn, etc.) Gone are the days of Julie Newmar and Angelina Jolie.

I guess we are seeing the death of female sexuality. All the recent female heroes are tomboys. (Katniss, Rey, Jyn, etc.) Gone are the days of Julie Newmar and Angelina Jolie. ??? I mean, blockbusters have been largely sexless (however sexy their stars) for quite a long time, that's nothing new. But what about these characters or actresses says tomboy to you? I don't see it at all. Ripley was more of a tomboy 30 years ago than Lara Croft or Katniss or whomever is now. Hell one of Katniss's big dilemmas was which of the two hot guys who were into her she should choose. And I guess you've missed how Scarlett Johansson and Cara Delevingne are in every other movie these days. I guarantee you it's not for their lack of sex appeal. They aren't feminine. Linda Carter is feminine, Jennifer Lawrence isn't. You could recast Rey and Jyn with male actors and not have to change a thing. I guess it boils down to personal opinion regarding Johansson, I don't find her sexy whatsoever. Don't know who Cara Delevingne is. I think the extent a female character expresses her femininity is entirely dependent on the context of the situation. When we meet Katniss, her biggest challenge is finding enough food to feed her family and barter for other goods her family needs. She then gets thrown into arenas where everyone else is trying to kill her, then ends up in a bunker, and ultimately behind enemy lines in a war zone. Not much opportunity to express her femininity in a meaningful way. Plus, I think Katniss can be plenty feminine when the story requires. Rey is a similar situation: a scavenger on a backwater planet trying to simply survive. Jyn began in prison and then went to war zones. The context simply doesn't call for either character being particularly feminine. On the flip side there can be backlash when a woman is dressed in a way that seems inappropriate. For example, there were numerous complaints about the main actress in Jurassic World running around the jungle trying to avoid dinosaurs while wearing high heels.
