I second your thoughts, Dave. Besides the masterpiece HAMLET, the score that deserves to be better rated is in my opinion STATE OF GRACE. The main theme alone is one of the most transcendent pieces ever written by EM (among my 10 favourite cues for sure), a genuine tour de force. I call it “dissonant beauty” since the Maestro managed to inject both aspects into it in a haunting manner. And as a whole, this moody and consistent score has a few other great pièces in display.

I like the 'Wolf' film. It's a very important movie, according to Ennio. What puts me off the score a bit is that weird keyboard effect running through some cues, it's annoying. Before this thread, I'd never heard of 'State Of Grace' so no idea about that one. If I'm not allowed to pick 'Lolita' as my favourite, I'd probably go for 'Bugsy'. 'Love Affair' is nice too.

What Dreams May Come

Well, if THAT counts, the choice is easy!

Never heard of State of Grace? Great irish gangster movie thomas, with Sean Penn, ed Harris and an excellent Gary Oldman (when was he not) and Laurent is exactly right, the main theme which runs thru it is very clever indeed, in typical complex and brave Ennio style, he runs two lines concurrently and overlaps them. A style as laurent points out he was requested to replicate in Bugsy, so State of Grace was the original. Its gotta be on youtube. Its one of those quite common slow-burn themes. You hear it first time and think Mmmm, not sure there Ennio. Second time you are Mmmm its got something. And by about 3rd or 4th playing you are like Wow, thats genius!

Hi,

I saw a previous thread about his 80's and 90's favorites but a lot of the scores for his italian films made that list so I wanted this one to just focus on his 90's scores that were from films that were made here.

During this decade he did

State of Grace
Hamlet
Bugsy
City of Joy
In the Line of Fire
Love Affair
Disclosure
Wolf
U Turn
Bulworth

I like Bugsy the best, then Disclosure.

I like them all, but I particularly love WOLF, HAMLET, and BUGSY.

Absolutely, same here, and in that order. These are scores I listen to pretty frequently still, maybe more often than some of the older classics.
