FROM TILL THREE is the only film Elmer Bernstein appeared in his own scene (with lyricist Alan Bergman) trying to sell a Tin Pan Alley type on a song they have come up to accompany a crazy popular best selling novel. This song “Hello and Goodbye” is one of THE most beautiful Elmer wrote and was nominated for a Golden Globe award. This is THE most offbeat western Charles Bronson ever did, it is funny and romantic and is a satire about fame. Also it is my favorite Frank Gilroy directed movie. AND on the same bill is THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE Sam Peckinpah’s gentlest film with Jason Robards and ( a lot of) Stella Stevens. Also Jerry Goldsmith’s score has a special place in my heart. The soundtrack is out of print and can’t be bought for less than $50. His adaptation of Richard Gillis’s songs are lovely but his own song and score is really the type of intimate song score by him that I love. Both films run tonight and tomorrow at the New Beverly Cinema. It is rare to find either in a theater with 35mm prints.

Under any circumstances, THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE would be a tough film to market. But the poster below doesn't make me want to rush to the theater.
