I watched the first of Netflix' three-part FIVE CAME BACK documentary today, and really liked it.

The score is by Jeremy Turner with a great main title theme by Thomas Newman. There needs to be a collection of Newman's TV series themes put out at some point, damn it!

is this based on the book of the same name - Hollywood directors who served in WWII?
Hope so. Great book!

I really like his theme--sort of a mini-suite, really--for Boston Public.

Just watched part one.

As mentioned above, i read the book and loved it. A perfect subject for a documentary.

I had trepidations however because I knew it would depend almost exclusively on archive film shot in Academy ratio, 35mm, 16mm ,8mm and video sources*. Virtually all new docs conform (needlessly) to the new standard of 1:78 aspect ratio; even Mr. DOcumentary , Ken Burns has surrendered to the widescreen Mafia. Fortunately, Monsieur Bouzreau and co, have respect for our recorded history and all footage is presented without alteration!!!

T. Newman's main theme is the best thing he has done on years!
The propulsive, minimalist underscore is also excellent.

check it out!

*sadly, they add "film-look' to archive video. Again, this isn't necessary to do if you are not shooting on film or showing this in a theater on film stock.

Good book, good series, with many unfamiliar details about the directors' wartime challenges and experiences. The book does sin, however, when it praises Wyler for creating the big payoff graveyard scene in BEST YEARS by musical means. The composer is not even mentioned.

I just heard that Main Title Theme for the first time and I must say that sounds to my ears that they temp-tracked it. Because it sounded familiar, like something else I`ve heard before but can`t figure it out what it might be.
