It's a very fun concert and the one in LA went off without a hitch. It opens with Driving Miss Daisy and as soon as I hear that DMD beat I was all smiles. They really did a great performance of my favorite Zimmer score DMD. I had goosebumps and was one happy guy! The rest of the concert were well played and interesting suites from many of his famous scores. I would have liked to have heard Backdraft, but other than that I was one satisfied customer

I also went to the performance at the Microsoft Theater on Friday and found it to be quite the experience. It was certainly unlike any other film music concert I've attended and, while I definitely wouldn't want all (or even most) concerts of film scores to be in this style, it was definitely an exciting and overall impressive show. I will say that the first half (before the intermission) was more my taste than the second, but that also reflects my general preference for Zimmer's earlier work. "Crimson Tide", "Gladiator", and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" suite were all major highlights. I'd heard "Driving Miss Daisy" live (with Zimmer on piano) before at the Golden State Pops' Varese Sarabande anniversary concert, but it was great to hear it again. The absolute high point, though, had to be the amazing suite from "The Lion King" with Lebo M appearing live to perform the vocals. The second half was still very impressive, but also a bit overwhelming and, ultimately, kind of exhausting. The lighting and projection effects were something of a technological triumph, although I thought they eventually became a bit too much, particularly during the superhero scores. Grouping all of the highest intensity scores (especially the Nolan scores, which tend to be very edgy and mostly non-thematic) might not have been the best choice. This was a rare case where I was kind of glad there was only one encore as we were starting to hit the point of diminishing returns. That said, the second half really did showcase Zimmer's ability to essentially merge orchestral, rock, electronica, and even heavy metal into a coherent mix. I'm not remotely surprised that he ended up being a big hit with the Coachella crowd. I would absolutely recommend that Zimmer fans (even relatively casual ones) try to catch the tour if it comes to your area. It really was a unique experience.

I'm glad I saw him live (in Manchester, last year...although he's now playing my home town of Liverpool in June), but it's not something I would want to repeat (like the Brian Tyler concert also, who was good to see once, but I couldn't sit through it again). The first half was much better than the second, but as already mentioned above, my preference for Zimmer's music is very front loaded towards his earlier years, with almost anything from BATMAN BEGINS onwards falling flat to my ears. The second half was just so much noise and limited notes/ideas to my mind and I was desperate for it to end as it rocked on and on. I'm glad it's doing it for the kids but I'm hoping my forthcoming concerts of Craig Armstrong, David Shire/Trevor Jones, Michael Giacchino and JNH will be more rewarding and palatable to my ears.

Wait, this is cool? And someone is paying for this? Well, now I definitely think I'm too old. All those thundering sounds and flashing lights. It hurts just watching this video. With respect, this has some "OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD" to it. Yes, it's cool. It's cool to see thousands of young people losing their minds at a film music concert. It's cool that Zimmer is kind of becoming a rock star. It's cool to see a piece like "Mombasa" played live with exhilarating energy. It's cool to see a spotlight this size (or a blacklight if you'd rather) shine down on the medium we all love, even if we don't all love Zimmer. This.
