In this case I dont think it's accurate to objectively claim it's better (as opposed to simply preferring it). Shire's music is too good to dismiss so easily, especially compared to Barry's droning score.

Shire's music is great, without doubt, but Barry wrote a score that fits the film better. It might not be the best listening experience outside of the film (or it might not be as enjoyable as Shire's score is outside of the film), but within the story itself, Barry's music sets the nightmarish tone of the drama much better than Shire does. I hope someone will upload parts of the film with both scores to better illustrate this.

I really like Shire's score but it seems clear that the film makers wanted something darker in tone.

Just got it. Much better sound on this one. The Shire score is actually really good!

For Jim.
Tis a strange search engine this. Found it under Quartet Buffalo?

Does anyone know the olde-tyme banjo and fiddln' music used as the source of the medleys?
My guesses are in brackets but I can't place Medley 1.

34. Camptown Medley 1 (3:01)
35. Camptown Medley 2 (2:26) (Oh, Susannah)
36. Camptown Medley 3 (3:36) (Turkey in the Straw)
