I was wondering, does anyone know the actual date the first Star Wars soundtrack album was released to stores in 1977? I got the album before I saw the movie, based on John Williams name and the because the title "Star Wars" and album packaging made it look like a cool space film. I don't recall having seen much advertising for the film before I saw it. I'm just trying to figure out how long it was before I saw the film that I bought the album. I didn't see the Star Wars until the middle of June, after enough people who would ask me if I had see it yet would yell at me, "What's wrong with you? Go see it right now!"

I know the first pressing was available at least on June 4th 1977 at the Seattle TOWER RECORDS, that's where a friend of mine purchased it after we watch the movie twice at the old UA CINEMA 150 in Seattle. I don't know the exact date, but I do know that I had seen (I think, but am not certain, had bought) the album before the film opened. I remember being really impressed not only by the simple, but striking cover (the logo on a black background), but also by the fact that it was TWO discs.

Quick ramble here - I too remember that I knew very little about the film itself when I bought the double LP, and being disappointed that it wasn't electronic. I wonder if I'm the only person in the galaxy (this one) who was actually slightly disappointed when the opening fanfare blasted out of the speakers. Of course, when I saw the film, it became an almost magical experience.

You had me going. I thought the original album was coming out again. Any anniversary re-release plans?

You had me going. I thought the original album was coming out again. Any anniversary re-release plans? All the original Star Wars albums, with the original sequencing, combined tracks and concert arrangements in LP order, are out there digitally as of just a few months ago. They popped up without much fanfare (sorry) from Sony at the time. I found them on iTunes but I assume they are available in the other streaming outlets.

I think I may have bought the album before I saw the film on Memorial Day, five days into release. Can't remember for sure. But I do remember buying it at May D & F, one of the big department stores that dominated shopping into those days. In the waning years of these kinds of stores carrying LPs.

Considering that the album debuted on June 18 (on No. 119) in the Billboard charts I find it hard to believe it was released much earlier than that. Star Wars was only in 48 theaters in the world until June 17th! Crazy, huh? I've been meaning to look up old newspaper listings to figure out when I saw Star Wars 40 years ago.

I know memories can get fuzzy over time, especially when that time encompasses four decades, but I also faintly remember seeing the LP shortly before the film came out - only reason I really remember it is because the large Star Wars logo stood out to me, even before I really knew anything about the movie. I bought it the week before July 15th. It was a present for me-- er, for my brother's birthday. Man, when you're eight a LOT can happen in a month!

Well, just thinking about it more, may have to correct my own self - I did see the LP before I saw the movie, but it's entirely possible since the movie didn't open in Atlanta until June 28th or 29th that I just saw it before the movie came out there, not before it's actual release date of May 25th.

The soundtrack was released before the movie premiered. I know because I bought it as a kid and listened to it on an LP player at least a week or so before I saw the movie, and I saw the movie on opening day. At a small shopping mall in Seminole, Florida. The same mall where I'd buy Starlog and Famous Monsters. Those were the days. Star Wars didn't open everywhere on May 25, 1977. In fact, it was only playing in 43 theaters nationwide the first week: http://www.in70mm.com/news/2003/star_wars/theatres/index.htm

Wow, my memory was off by a month and half at least. According to this website http://thedigitalbits.com/columns/history-legacy--showmanship/force-to-be-reckoned-with/Page-3 Star Wars didn't open in Staten Island New York, until August 3rd 1977. (no wonder all my friends were giving me a hard time about not having seen it yet!) So I could've gotten the Soundtrack anytime in June or July. I remember I sat through it twice that first viewing. I wasn't going into Manhattan much by myself at that age, but I kept hearing that I HAD TO SEE IT at the Lowes Astor Plaza if I really wanted to experience it. So I don't remember when, but definitely in August before school started I made the trip to Manhattan and saw a Saturday Matinee at the Lowes Astor Plaza. Wow! Needless to say I kept going back to the Lowes as often as I could after that day. I eventually saw Star Wars 30 times in the first year it played, maybe more (I stopped counting after that).
