So. I finally got around to seeing the Hammer/Depp version of The Lone Ranger the other night.

I didn't hate it.

However...what kept going through my mind as I was watching it was that Arnie Hammer would have made a way better Superman than Henry Cavill..

Weird what goes through one's mind while watching a film.

I've said this elsewhere, but given that this is an allegedly pointless thread there's no impediment to me repeating it: I hope the disappointing second Jack Reacher film kills the franchise for the time being, and that someone more visionary re-visits it in about 15 years time with Hammer as Reacher.

But as Superman? Not the worst idea ever, but I personally consider Cavill perfectly adequate for what I consider to be one of the most boring superheroes.

I'm not familiar with the Jack Reacher franchise but from what I have read around the place, the main criticism is that Tom doesn't represent the physical presence of JR??

In regards to Arnie being Supes....He was just FUN in The Lone Ranger....which would probably be miscast in the tone of the new films (and I like the new films). But I would love to see his take on Superman.

Hard to imagine anyone being a worse Superman than Cavill to be honest. Hell, even I'd make a better Supermann than Cavill.

If there was a costume hero who's superpowers were the ability to beat the baddies with boredom then Cavill would be perfect for that role. But until ZeroCharismaMan makes it to the big screen, Cavill should be kept unemployed.

All the Cavill bashing reminds me of a long-ago quote from the late, great Phil Hartman (look him up, Englanders), who used to do a mean-spirited impression of then-First Lady Barbara Bush. Hartman said words to the effect--and my paraphrasing isn't far off the mark--"From everything I've seen and read about her, she seems like a nice lady and I'm the one who looks like the asshole."

In the case of Henry Cavill, I read the Cavill bashing, but when I watch his movies, enjoy his performances, and believe that he appears to be a thoroughly decent bloke offscreen, as well; It's his critics who end up looking and sounding like assholes.

Nothing personal against you, Mike_J, I am referring to mainstream media outlets and the like. smile

Cavill imo makes a perfectly fine Superman. He's no Christopher Reeve, but then no one ever will be when it comes to playing that role.

I have nothing against Cavill the actor, but why does he always have the look of someone who just crapped in his super undies?

I know Phil Hartman from The Simpsons. "You may remember me from such films as..." Is it the same Phil Hartman?

As for Cavill, I liked him as Napoleon Solo which he was in along with Armie Hammer of course. I thought they were both good. Cavill may yet play Bond I reckon, I think he'd be a good choice.

Why doesnt this thread say The henry cavill marmite thread ?

Because I don't have the talent to come up with witty thread titles.

There is no way Cavill has the acting ability or charisma of a jar of Marmite.

make petty or unnecessary objections.
"they caviled at the actor who was better looking and better off financially than they ever would be"

Fourteen years at this place makes that a knowing observation, Tall One.
