Great movie! Great score! Saw the film the day it opened back in 1987.
Gotta love that shoot 'em up at the end. Also, that main and end title is just fantastic!
Yeah, it's one of the really good action movies of the 1980s, with Nolte as an old school gruff no-nonsense Texas Ranger. Great cast all around, filled with lots of tough talking machos, some with the heart on the right and some with their heart on the wrong side. Unlike many other contemporary movies, the action scenes were excellently staged while grounded in reality. And Powers Boothe had a hyper cool name... Cash Bailey.
Now the movie is obviously a modern day western, and I always thought of its score as a Western score as well. It's a Western with cars and fittingly a Western score with electronics.
I wonder if Rip Torn originally had a larger role? He seems so wasted in this. I do recall reading about other characters who were excised entirely, such as Ironside's partner.
This is one of those rare Goldsmith scores which I still haven't warmed up to. I guess I'll keep trying, and since I like westerns I suspect a view of the film will greatly improve my appreciation for the music, especially seeing how much love it's getting in this thread.
A Goldsmith score I listened to on CD maybe twice before selling...just an hours' worth of "electronic woodchipper" loops and synth farts. Not at all a fan of this particular period of Goldsmith's career.
