They re-shaped the star inside the arrowhead, apparently to make it look foreign or "not of Western civilization." There was no call for that. That's just rubbing our nose in it. What's the point of a grueling walk on deep sand, under a broiling sun, when you can flip open a communicator and say "Beam us up"? Any walking distance is trivial when you can do that. The desert trudge is just contrived visual drama for its own sake. The trailer makes it appear that human white males are seen only as background and subordinate functionaries, but I'm confident we'll see some ranking ones as soon as the show reveals its true villain or its evil conspiracy. Or when they need to portray someone who "doesn't get it." We'll see white males then. I'll watch the premier if they stick with the plan to show it on CBS, but when it goes behind a pay wall, forget it.

Why do Hollywood writers love to give male names to female characters? I haven't noticed that particular thing, but in general Hollywood is trying to reverse every stereotype and dismantle every tradition. And women are addressed as Sir or Mister because women's gender must be ignored (except in the case of transgender women, whose new gender must be highlighted and celebrated). Of course, it's all in the execution. STD might portray its social ideology in an easy-going way, or a hell-bent and shrill one. We haven't really seen it yet. I'll watch the premier with an open mind if it's on free TV.

I didn't catch it right away those evil aliens are supposed to be Klingons. Their design just gets worse with every new incarnation. I was really hoping this looked like the various fan series which honors the original series esthetics, not the JJ universe. It's sad, just sad! Yeah, I think the best Klingons were in Star Trek The Motion Picture, they looked war like and severe. The JJ versions were all streamlined, I did not like it. Otherwise, this looks like a lot of effects and zoomey camera work and some lens flare. Hard to tell much other than that. But I am guessing this is going with a wide-net approach to gather in non Trekkers, so this will not be a by the book Trek series about ideas in the classic Trek genetic sense. But those days are probably over, I am not sure, it seems that there is a decent bit of real scripted series work taking place, but Trek - I do not know. It should rightly be most successful on television rather than movies. I think the whole effort here suffered a setback with Fuller leaving, I think he was forced out.

But, Hollywood still has a long way to go to address it's diversity problem"
