"The Empire Strikes Back" THE absolute best score for a sequel EVER! Yeah, not a lot of argument there. I'd put How to Train Your Dragon 2 as being at least on par with the original. Going into the area of sequels by different composers, The Wrath of Khan is in a different direction but a more than worthy sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Back to sequels by the same composer, The Search for Spock is better than The Wrath of Khan.

Gremlins 2 says hi.

The Sea Hawk, if one assumes it is a sequel to The Adventures of Robin Hood, which I kinda do.

The Empire Strikes Back Predator 2 Bride of Frankenstein Gremlins 2 is a more full-bodied, cohesive score then Gremlins. Matrix: Reloaded adds some cool electronica to Davis's golden-age oriented score.

Thank you, DS, for mentioning RETURN TO PEYTON PLACE. You're thinking outside the narrow time-frame which seems to be the parameter so far, and you're citing a score by one of the all-time cinema maestros. Permit me to cast my vote for another Waxman score which is my all-time personal favorite sequel score: BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. Runner-up: THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN, Hans J. Salter. (Close third would be FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN, but that great score is more of a mosaic, mostly original Salter, with additional material by Salter and Skinner, "Salterized" -- as Charles Previn christened the process -- from a couple of previous Universal horrors.) PS: Nice try, Sean, but of course we can't accept your vote, or else that way lies madness. (What's next? SUPERMAN as the sequel to STAR WARS?)

Some of my favorite sequel scores that really build upon or switch up the sound/tone from the first score: "TRON: Legacy: "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" "Batman Returns" "The Matrix Reloaded" "The Return of the King" "Alien 3" "M:I - Rogue Nation" "Predator 2" Too many Bonds to name: "You Only Live Twice," "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," "Moonraker," "A View to a Kill," "Tomorrow Never Dies," "Quantum of Solace," etc.

Nice try, Sean, but of course we can't accept your vote, or else that way lies madness. (What's next? SUPERMAN as the sequel to STAR WARS?) Au contraire, Preston. I think of Sea Hawk as a kind of Robin Hood on the high seas, with Flynn portraying essentially the same dude, if more serious, and, well, gray-scale. Plus second-rate reproductions of Basil Rathbone and Olivia de Havilland, which is pure sequelitis. Not to mention Claude Rains in a key role, and many of Robin's associates aboard. Plus we've got Flora Robson as Elizabeth 1, the coolest British monarch since, well, Richard coeur de lion. Plus a climactic sword fight. That's sequel territory in every important way except identical character names (well, and I guess time period, but if Back to the Future counts, then I'm still in like Flynn). No comparison between Supes and Star Wars, as no cast is shared, the arc is entirely different, etc. etc. I stand by my claim!* *But you are probably right about The Bride of Frankenstein.

....I'll sneak in Mysterious Island if that can be regarded as a sequel to 20,000 Leagues. You've got MY vote, Adam!
