I have the three CDs from Silva, with Grainer's music and library music.

Since then, there was a three-CD set featuring only Grainer's music. From what I've read, this was presented in a user-unfriendly format, similar to that used on the Dark Shadows box set.

There was also a three-CD set of library music.

I suspect that the Silva discs will be enough Prisoner music for me, for this lifetime at least. As it is, I find the village brass band music insufferable on its own terms. I ended up placing the best music from all three discs onto a single CD-R. I believe I used mostly music from File #2, but I would need to check.

Having said all this, I would be interested to hear from Prisoner experts if they feel that the Silva discs are a reasonably good representation of this music, or if there were any particular glaring omissions that should have been included.

In my opinion, the 3-CD set by Network is a must have because you can listen to the whole scores without the brass band and many scores and cues are missing in the Silva edition which is basically a quick sampler designed for neophytes that recapture the general feeling of the episodes but not the scores. Do you catch my point? Furthermore, you have the three different scores done by separate composers—Farnon, Josephs, Grainer—for the pilot "Arrival": incredible.

The only complaint is the cue by cue presentation of the pilot that sound like a repetitive library music with outtakes but the rest of the scores is very harmonious "and" complete. For your information, the disc of the pilot is called "Search for a Theme" hence the experimental approach because the composers did some tests to please McGoohan and mold the series.

The multi disc set from Network features pretty much all of the music specially written for the show by multiple composers (Grainer only wrote the theme) and contains some very nice cues by Robert Farnon and Wilfred Josephs not included on the Silva set. Network just threw every damn cue on to it, no matter how small, with very little programming, so it's very dense. But I like it that way, personally! You could always do your own playlists. smile

So I'd say get that plus the Silva set (which has most of the important library cues) for the best representation of The Prisoner's diverse musical universe.

OK, so at some point, I will pick up the Network set, but because I already have the Silva discs, I can probably skip the set of library music.

I actually not only found this to be just as essential to have as the Network set, I also found it a much easier listen. This is because the library cues are presented in their entirety and organized generally by episode. The Network set, which was the first of their mammoth releases, suffers from "first time out / kitchen sink syndrome." It works as an archive, but as a listening experience, it's awful. No other set came off like that other than maybe The Protectors. However, thanks to having both box sets, I was able to reconstruct "Arrival" and it's a fine score reassembled.

And the library music isn't all brass band. In fact, very little of it is. The Silva CDs have much of it. A lot of the library cues are really entertaining in their own right.

I'm confused.

You need three discs to get the scores, and another three discs to get the library music, but you can still fit the scores and library music on three discs?

Keep in mind that Silva Screen CDs are sampler-compilations.
The real McCoy is the Network and the Unmutual editions.

Well, that's not really what I'm asking:

You need three discs for the scores (Network)
You need three discs for the library cues (whatever label did that release)
But the "Unmutual" set, containing score and library, is also three discs.

How does that work?

I wish someone would ACCURATELY re-record this theme in Stereo. One of the greatest themes ever written!

AFAIK, the Unmutual collection is library music only. No original scores.

OK, that makes sense.

So it sounds like, since I already have the Silva discs, I should probably just pick up the Network collection at some point.

Hmmm. All I know is that one group of three of them are called called "Volume 1, 2 and 3" --- I bought these very early on (90s) --- and the other group of three was issued later with a different track sequence and are called "File #1, 2 and 3". Is that what you mean? All six are soundtracks to Patrick McGoohan's TV series, 'THE PRISONER'. smile

Unfortunately, they're in a box somewhere and I don't have them handy to check specifics.... frown

Good lord, who knew that the music for a TV show that only had 12 or whatever episodes could be so confusing!

I have three discs on Silva Sreen that are titled File #1, 2, and 3. Am I understanding correctly that there were two different series of three individual discs?

I was just going from (admittedly hazy) memory, OnyaBirri. The three called "File #" are probably on Silva (like you said), and the three called "Volume" are the ones on Network (NOT the "Unmutual" Collection) mentioned by the above posters.

Man, I wish I had them handy.... frown

Checking other sources, I see you were correct Onya, and that "Volumes 1, 2 and 3" are on Network, and that "File #1, 2 and 3" are indeed on Silva. Boy, is my face red. frown Shows what happens sometimes when working purely from memory....

I got the very first release on vinyl, I think it's a label called Bam Caruso? I then got the original Silva cds of vols 2 & 3. Didn't get 'round to getting the first one on cd and then they seemed to be superseded by these 'File' things. Am I right in saying they have dialogue on them? Not really the kind of thing I want. So I still have the three in two different formats.

Anyway, if I had got the first on cd I'd be happy with them. The Network stuff does seem a bit daunting and I fear I'd never listen to them. I looked at the other ITC stuff that was released that way and was put off by the presentation, which seemed basically nil. I'm happy for the purists who want EVERYTHING but that ain't me. Oh, AND I dragged my feet in getting the cutdown releases which WERE more up my street. But they're sold out now. Does anyone know if the others like the Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) ones were a good representation of the shows' soundtracks? They had track listings which looked identical top the complete releases. All looked a bit 'bitty'.
