As reported in Film Music Reporter, Danny Elfman has written a logo theme for Universal's newly branded "Dark Universe" - its modernized cinematic franchise using the old Universal monsters that kicks off with Tom Cruise's THE MUMMY.
The article includes a video and claims it includes the new music, but this doesn't really sound like Elfman to me. It echoes some of the same staccato rhythms of PLANET OF THE APES in the early going but then grows broader and broader until, to me, it's unrecognizable as Elfman. Thoughts? If it is Elfman it's worrying to the extent that it continues the MCU trend of hiring A-list composers and browbeating the personality out of them. (Although to be fair, Elfman's work on AGE OF ULTRON is some of my favorite material in all the MCU.)
For what it's worth, a Universal press release posted elsewhere confirmed that Depp has signed to play the Invisible Man and, much more interestingly, Javier Bardem is on board as Frankenstein's Monster.
