I just got back from seeing Shanghai Knights, with a decent score by Randy Edelman. Is there going to be a score release?

The movie is at least as good as the first one (which I enjoyed greatly), if not an improvement. Edleman quotes his Shanghai Noon theme enough times for it to be effective, and there seems to be a lot more brass this time around, which seems to suit the English locale.

There were too many distracting songs in this sequel though. The first film used the songs to great effect, but they seemed more out of place in Victorian england. The score had a good mix in the film, especially in the library/study scene fight.

I still feel that Edelman would sound better if used a full orchestra. Sometimes the score sounds cheap, which was the only thing in the movie that seemed that way. (how many movies have a big fight scene on the Thames with a backdrop of fireworks!)

Shanghai Knights was a fun film with a good score. I'm a sucker for action movies in old London (Young Sherlock Holmes, Mummy Returns, etc.) and this one didn't disapoint. I also enjoyed the many injokes (Charlie Chaplin, Sir Conan Doyle) and the wonderful fight scenes (the sword fight at the end was amazing!)

All in all, a fun, not-too-serious adventure film! I hope Edelman gets a score release, because there was some fun stuff on the soundtrack!

I agree, I think the score was better than XXX and Shanghai Noon, and I hope it gets a commercial release. I'm taking a film class, and I found it interesting to note that Jackie Chan gives due credit to Charlie Chaplin in the movie, because his comedic style is based somewhat on the exploits of Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd.

Its out already to buy, so yes its been released. But for me, I stopped buying when he came out with Anaconda. That score would have been beautiful had it been completely orchastrated. I dont like the mix between real and keyboard. It just cant beat the real thing, i dont care how good it sounds. Just like computer effects, they just cant come close to the real thing. And Shangi Noon was terrible to me. Igh...

Actually, there ARE some score tracks on the disc, but not many...the rest are overly-familiar "British Invasion" songs from the sixties.

Bah!!!

How about a score release? Or does this fall into the "comedy" genre that doesn't sell?

Talk about bringing up an old thread!

It turns out that the CD does have some score on it. I don't remember why amazon said it didn't at the time.

It's on sale for 7 bucks right now at amazon, btw.

Unless you are asking for a complete score release, which I can't imagine would EVER happen. A comedy score, by a composer who isn't all that amazing smile

I bought this for $1 in LA last year - I like it fine, it's a stilted listen with
the songs and some of the score towards the end, and then, I think, yet more
songs. Songs were ok, I hope to get Shanghai Noon someday on Varese, looks like
a longer, probably more structured listen.

I actually enjoy a great deal of his work. smile I have a 13 minute suite from this score. (Don't know where I got it from) And I think its marvelous. Would love a complete score, but yeah I know, wishful thinking!

Would really love an expanded release. Maybe this is a questions for MV?
