not the biggest wheddon fan but if this is his new taste in composers I am on board! this is certainly an improvement. here's hoping that batman theme makes a cameo somewhere!
Junkie XL is taking it in stride. Here's what he has to say:

It pains me to leave this project, but a big thanks to Zack for asking me to be part of his vision, and I wish Danny, Joss and Warner Bros. all the best with Justice League.

He has also written a main theme for The Flash in 1990.
An interesting and unexpected choice but I'm really looking forward to this now. Let's see if he quotes some of the material from BvS or not. I hope to hear the Elfman-take on the Wonder Woman theme at least.
Certainly an interesting twist, but hard to know what it means now. I would like to think it means WB/DC are loosening up a bit. I've found their films so far (I haven't seen "Wonder Woman" yet) to be dreary, self-serious, and overproduced, loud instead of exciting, gray instead of stylish.
Elfman, of course, composes in many styles, so it's impossible at this point to know which direction he'll go. But presumably, they did not let Holkenborg go so that Elfman could do a Holkenborg impression.
I think It would be very cool if Elfman could somehow reprise his TV series THE FLASH's theme and also rework his classic Batman theme and fashion something more modern. Hell; I wouldn't even mind if he reprised Williams Superman theme for a good measure this time-But It wont happen. I know
JXL replacement with Elfman is the greatest news I've heard in ages! Ditto Snyder as director. I found his style to be so presumptuous (i.e. boring). SchiffyM is giving an accurate definition above.
Hopefully Danny Elfman's new score might sound more like his Batman or Avengers, than The Circle. I also hope he can bring back at least snippets of his iconic Batman theme. It's the same studio, so it could be possible.

My opinion of the three previous DC films was pretty much the same, and found Wonder Woman to be a dramatic course correction for them into a tone and style I do like, so maybe you will feel the same. They have made promises Justice League will be similar in tone to Wonder Woman (from the way they describe it), so I'm hopeful.
The hiring of Elfman is certainly a sign they are going for something different. I was not as against Holkenborg as some others, but I certainly would've preferred someone like Elfman on it. Now we will get to see that.
It is interesting especially because of his score history with Batman and Flash. I'm listening now to Elfman's cues for Avengers 2 and his Spider-Man scores. I'm hoping he was hired because they wanted something in that style. I really hope he will come up with an epic and memorable main theme for Justice League as he has done for other films.
