Do any of our resident UK FSMers pursue this hobby? Do you know anyone who does? If so, what are some of the more interesting things you or they have found? (not counting disease or near-drowning when the tide comes in):

I never have, nor do I know anyone who has. But as far as the metal-detector bit is concerned, it's got dedicated followers. The biggest haul in recent years was in Staffordshire, where a bloke with a detector found literally thousands of gold items from the 7th Century Anglo-Saxon era:

There's a documentary on how he found it here:

Then again, there's the old Ealing Alec Guinness film 'The Mudlark' ....

I haven't watched it, but there's an acclaimed comedy TV series 'Detectorists'. I dunno if it's available your side of the puddle:

I think the only "mudlarking" FSMers ever do is their endless searching for those obsolete compact discs.

“The Mudlark” is one of my favourite movies.

Alec Guinness gives the definitive Disraeli and Irene Dunne does a very good turn as Queen Victoria.

Andrew Ray was just wonderful at that age.

Thanks for the suggestion, CH-CD! You're the second one to recommend that film.

My newfound humility prevents me from including my own posts unless I'm simply "Abbott" to another FSMer's "Costello."

(I know, I know..."Nev-ver-herdovit.")
