WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21

HAN SOLO---co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from the young Han Solo movie by Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy due to "creative differences". A source said Ron Howard (APOLLO 13) is the leading candidate to be the new director. The other two candidates are Joe Johnston (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, THE ROCKETEER) and Lawrence Kasdan (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, RETURN OF THE JEDI). Directors Guild of America rules might prevent Kasdan from directing because he co-wrote the script.
The source said friction began between the co-directors and Kennedy and Kasdan early during filming, “It was a culture clash from day one. She didn’t even like the way they folded their socks." Kennedy wanted "tight control" of the filming while Lord and Miller's shooting style called for more creative freedom.
The two co-directors, who emphasize comedy and improvisation, ventured away from the Kasdan script. The source said, “People need to understand that Han Solo is not a comedic personality. He’s sarcastic and selfish.”
The source added, “Kathy, her team and Larry Kasdan have been doing it their way for a very long time. They know how the cheese is made and that’s how they want it made. It became a very polarizing set.”
Lord and Miller are now in talks to direct THE FLASH movie.

FIRST MAN---biomovie based on the biography about Neil Armstrong, the first astronaut to walk on the Moon. Ryan Gosling (LA LA LAND, BLADE RUNNER 2049) will play Armstrong. Corey Stoll (ANT-MAN, THE STRAIN) will play Buzz Aldrin. Kyle Chandler (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, ZERO DARK THIRTY) will play Deke Slayton. Damien Chazelle (LA LA LAND) is the director.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE---Warner Bros. has hired Christine Lavaf to write the script for the movie based on the classic Rod Serling tv series. Lavaf was a writer's assistant on FALLING SKIES and wrote an episode of FRINGE.

THE ROCK---Michael Bay talked about an early idea for a sequel to his 1996 movie that starred Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery, “The sequel that I have in my mind for this movie is basically after Nic Cage is married to Carla, they drive off. Nic Cage has this microfilm of all this bad government confidential [info], like, who killed JFK? The government comes after Nic Cage with a vengeance. We’re talking out to kill. It turns into more of a thriller. Nic Cage has nowhere to turn, because he’s been stabbed in the back by the government, and they’re after him. Maybe he takes Carla, I’m not sure. Maybe they separate. I’d really like to separate Nic and Carla, and have Nic try to employ the help of Sean Connery. Basically, taking THE ROCK off exactly where it left off.”

AVATAR---Oona Chaplin (GAME OF THRONES), granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin, will play Varang in the sequels.

THE FORCE---David Mamet (THE UNTOUCHABLES) is in talks to write the script for the movie based on the novel about a decorated NYPD detective who is also a crooked cop caught up in a major heroin bust. James Mangold (LOGAN) is the director.

FANTASTIC FOUR---20th Century Fox has hired Seth Grahame-Smith to write the script for a kid-friendly movie from the perspective of the children of Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman. The movie would prevent the rights from reverting back to Marvel Studios.

WONDER WOMAN 2---DC Comics' Geoff Johns said he and Patty Jenkins have a "cool idea" for the sequel, “Patty and I are writing the treatment right now. The goal is to make another great ‘Wonder Woman’ film.”

THE DARK TOWER---director Nikolaj Arcel confirmed the movie is a sequel to the Stephen King novels.

SPIDER-MAN---Sony Pictures is reportedly develop spinoff movies for Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter to follow the Venom and Silver & Black movies.

WATCHMEN---HBO and Damon Lindelof (LOST, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS) are in talks to develop a tv series based on the comic book.

WAYWARD SISTERS---CW SUPERNATURAL spinoff series is underway which will focus on Sheriff Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes).

THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS---movie underway based on the children's book starring Jack Black with Eli Roth as director.

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS---a representative for Lewis (LINCOLN) announced he's retiring from acting, “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

Apparently when a director is fired DGA rules do not permit anyone already involved in the production to step in: they have to hire someone not involved.

Maybe it's to protect directors from internal coups?

I think Bay was referring to what he would have done had they done a sequel to the film shortly after The Rock was released. As a fan of the film, I for one am glad that this sequel never got made.

There's a "moonwalking" joke in there somewhere.
