Notice the similarities between this theme and Alfred Newman's music for the grotto scene in " The Song Of Bernadette" ?

Williams was at the top of his game with this score. One of my favorite tracks is "Father's Study" when Indy asks Marcus if he believes the grail exists. The grail theme swells up as we see the representations on the wall. The music really sells the scene.

Wonderful theme, of course. Part of my beloved "religious sound" by Williams (of which there are several examples).

Yeah, I don't hear it.

What's great about the Grail Theme is that it starts out representing the religious/myth aspects of the story and then over the course of the movie becomes instead the father and son theme, emphasizing the very point of the whole story, the importance of one over the other. Brilliant.

Favorite movie score ever. I love every theme in that movie, but I especially love that one. How he manages to make it sound religious but not in entirely obvious ways is so fascinating to me. There's a reason I reviewed that movie first! http://bit.ly/2tkPdau

I love the whole score too! SCHERZO FOR MOTORCYCLE AND ORCHESTRA is great too, even though I don't know what a scherzo is.wink

Why would we?

I love Kije – was just listening to it over the weekend, in fact – but I had to listen to it again just now to even figure out what your point of comparison was. I think I hear it, but boy, that feels like a real reach to me.

No room here to elaborate. Simply take the 'Romance' theme, consider it 13 notes, remove notes 4-7 and also drop note 13. Make a drop of a fifth for 8-12.

Variation is cool.

I just did a side-by-side comparison of the Kije Romance and a couple of variations of the Grail theme, and I understand what you are saying William. But all I hear is a little superficial similarity because of the folk roots of both themes. My point is, I hear no influence here from Prokofiev to Williams, as I do, to take just one example, in Annakin's theme from Phantom Menace.

But I'm glad you mentioned it, because there is a vague connection, and I never made it before.
