Hi James, have you heard anything further from Silva Screen about those missing Tadlow dowloads, or the next Prometheus batch?

Many thanks

Hi James

I've noticed that the four Prometheus titles previously available for download / streaming appear to have been taken down?

Has the label decided not to continue with digital options for their releases?

Is there some other reason for this?

Look forward to hear from you. Many thanks.

There is a very good reason for this. The company who were handling the downloads, my old record label, only managed to get 4 titles available online for downloads in 18 months! So I have cancelled that deal and am moving all the titles to a new distributor who can make more of the catalogue available soon. But I must say the amount earned on the download titles that were available was rather pathetic....

Thank you for the reply James.

So you gave ol' SS the boot, eh? wink

I'm happy to hear that more titles will be incoming, does that include the earlier Tadlow titles that aren't available in all territories? For example, Exodus, Lawrence of Arabia and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes aren't available in my iTunes or Google Play Stores.

Sad to hear that the returns are not great, perhaps over time and with a larger catalogue, things will improve.

Hence the distributor's disinterest in working to get more out there.

I'm still trying to grasp how the download / streamimg model works financially from the perspective of the rights owner. One would think that returns would be higher based on the elimination of physical media production and distribution costs. Is the problem that the iTunes and Spotifys and Play Stores take a too large chunk of the pie, or is it the aggregators' costs that gobble up the profits? If an independent label sells their own titles via their own website (don't Silva Screen and BSX do that?), would the margins improve? Or is it simply that the sales of digital are miniscule versus physical media?

Digital sales of music have surpassed that of physical media overall. Not so for our niche market, I'm betting.

I think soundtrack collectors will be the last to give up buying CDs...judging by how many are released by all the specialist labels every month smile

Downloads give inferior sound quality although people who Download on a regular basis try to say otherwise and buying the CD when available is always the better option . I wish Downloads had never been invented.

Thanks for sharing. I buy downloads because they cost a fraction of the price of CDs. I buy CDs if it's something I want really badly and there is no download option. The sound quality of downloads is quite good enough for me. You can't take it with you after all. If others want to pay more for physical media they are of course entitled to do so.

Not true with lossless downloads.

Indeed. I assumed the poster in question was referring to lossy downloads. If the mainstream a la carte services start offering lossless downloads I'd welcome it, however I will not pay a premium for lossless over lossy.

I go for the download option every time, if available in at least 320 kbps quality or preferably, lossless.

More convenient, no storage problems. I know the notes usually aren't available, but I'll live with it. The music is what matters.

That might also be a US-thing. I wonder how much the European market for the boutique labels is these days...

Don't forget the rest of us non-US, non-EURO people. In my dream soundtrack world, all the boutique stuff would be available in physical and digital format indefinitely. The physical media brigade could have theirs and I'd be quite happy with my digital library and my sturdy bank balance.

Hope James gets well soon. There are a good many things in life way more important than soundtracks.
