My son and his girlfriend are flying to California tomorrow for 8 days. They are beginning their trip in San Francisco and working their way down to LA. They are pretty savvy travelers and they have a very interesting itinerary but I am wondering if you California folks can provide some out of the way, unusual stops for these two 20 somethings. The are renting a car and are doing airbnb ( not crazy about that btw) but they're adults. They love lots of things so any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks.

On their way back, make sure they play "I Remember California" (and relate to its cynical, haunted melancholy-not that the OP can even see this post):

I am pretty sure it's on their itinerary Jim. smile

Wow, the response has been overwhelming. Amazing in view of the fact that we have so few FSM members who live in California.

Edw, I think you'd get a lot more responses if you wrote something like "Help Me Californians" in the topic heading. Some from California may not have read this topic.

I don't live in California, but my brother does and he thinks Carmel (and Carmel-by-the-Sea) and
Monterey are gorgeous and fun. He also love San Lois Obispo and The Madonna Inn (pricey) in that town. He likes many of the coastal cities.

I'd like a monetary tip, please, for my profound insights. wink

If they go to Carmel, can they visit Clints house?

I would - but i expect id end up calling his wife by the wrong name! wink

Sorry, Edw, but the last time I offered suggestions to someone who asked for them on the FSM board, they were all summarily dismissed. Anyway, I don't know how much help I can be, after all we FSMers never leave our parents's basements. wink

All I can think of off the top of my head are perhaps The Golden Gate Bridge, Wine Country, Universal Studios and Disneyland.

If they are driving south, make sure they take Highway 1 through Big Sur and on down to Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. Then go down to Santa Barbara. Too bad they can't take a jog to the east and go to Bishop. It is a gorgeous place. They filmed many westerns there. (Think Randolph Scott/Budd Beotticher.) High snow capped peaks, desert below.

The California Redwoods in the north are beautiful.

Daz wutt happ'nd with me!

Recommendations? Depends on their interests. Architecture? There's still some weird architecture left in LA, like Googie stuff. They could even visit their favorite movie/TV locations.

Would they wanna see The Library That's Trying Way Too Hard to Look Like It's Not a Library? Tell them to go see the one in West Hollywood. It's across from the Big Blue Whale (the Design Center).

While they're in WeHo, they can hang out until nightfall, watch the population of the city triple, and go pick up drunk men (on Santa Monica Blvd.) or drunk women (on Sunset Blvd.), depending on their inclination(s) that night.

Not the wild, partying type? I'd then be inclined to send them elsewhere, to see the Chicken Boy statue ("Too Tall to Live, Too Weird to Die"), or the Most Bizarre KFC in the USA over on Western Avenue, but that might be too wild for them, if they're the kind that get overwhelmed when there are not enough marshmallows for their cocoa on Saturday night.... smile

*****

If they want to choose their own sites in LA: they might visit a library to see if there's any "weird things to visit while in LA" books, which they can check out for free. Or just use their new-fangled phones to photocopy pages out of. I've read a few and they are a hoot.

If they've never seen a tree bigger than any other living thing on the planet, they can visit Sequoia National Park on their way down to LA.

If they're the average sort of travelers, I'd say Jen's recommendations will fill the bill.

Now this is what I'm talkin' about. Seriously, thanks folks. joan, the tip is in the mail for the sage advice. I sent it in the form of a used copy of the music from Fast and Furious, Tokyo Drift. smile

Bill, they had already visited Clint's house when we talked to them last and apparently his wife's name is Bill. (Forgive me Clint, I have no idea what Bill is talking about)

jenk, that was pretty funny. Ironically, my son just built a fancy man cave in our basement and the joke around here is that he and his friends finally left our basement for at least a week.

David, you were the guy I was looking to hear from. I should have put your name in the subject line. Apparently, I got the itinerary in reverse and they started the trip in LA. When they finally deigned to give both sets of parents a call, they called from the beach at Santa Monica. When I asked how Airbnb went, I got a one word answer..."fine."

I have passed on everything you kind folks have listed and I actually received a text from both of the travelers with a thank you and a <3 a/k/a a heart. smile Thanks all.

Sorry, didn't see this thread until now.

In San Francisco, not everyone makes it up to the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, but it is one of the most beautiful spots in the city with incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge and fantastic hiking trails around Lands End. From there you can walk or drive to the ruins of the Sutra Baths, the Lands End Lookout, and lunch at the Cliff House. We are suppose to have sunny weather at the coast this week so tell them to check it out.

Also, note that highway 1 is closed in the vicinity of Big Sur, so it isn't possible to drive all the way down from San Francisco to LA. I haven't been down since this happened and I'm not certain how the detours are working, so best to check in advance.

One last bit of advice: tell them to be sure not to leave anything at all in their rental car. We are having an epidemic of break-ins, especially in areas frequented by tourists, and the bad guys know to target rental cars. Be careful and have fun!

Thank you so much for this info. I have passed it on to them. This is the first time they have been old enough to rent a car and I know they are planning the Big Sur trip. They are very responsible young adults but I am not sure they would have access to the info about the detours. I visited the area the Lands End Lookout and Cliff House years ago and it was indeed breathtaking. I recall a beautiful beach there with stunning views. Forgot the name and will have to look it up. Thank you again.

Well, we picked them up at Logan last night, found a local pub for a late night meal and the two young travelers recounted their whole trip. They had a wonderful adventure. Airbnb was a huge success, they took amazing photos of the breathtaking views and loved every minute of it. Along the way, they had their first up close and personal view of a California wildfire, spent two hours looking for a parking spot near their Airbnb rental in San Francisco and suffered the explosion in the trunk of their rental of a growler of beer lovingly purchased from Monkish Brewing Co. However, one growler made it home safely in a checked bag of luggage.

I was asked to thank all of you on their behalf for all of the kind sightseeing suggestions.
