Kino Lorber have detailed their upcoming Blu-ray release of directors John English and William Witney's classic serial Adventures of Captain Marvel. (1941). The release will be available for purchase on September 19.

Synopsis: Considered by many to be the finest serial ever made, Adventures of Captain Marvel chronicles the exploits of "The World's Mightiest Mortal" as he combats the Scorpion, a hooded villain intent on obtaining six optical lenses that turn ordinary stones into gold! Highlighting the serial were the fabulous flying sequences by Republic's ace special effects team, Howard and Theodore Lydecker. Combining a wired dummy photographed against real backgrounds in natural sunlight, with spectacular take-off leaps and landings supplied by action ace, David Sharpe, the final effects are still as fascinating today as they were in 1941.

Adventures of Captain Marvel marked the very first time a comic book superhero's exploits were transferred to the silver screen, and the resulting 12 chapters have yet to be equaled in excitement and entertainment.

I saw this only the other week (DVD), three episodes a day over four days (these serials really don't work if you watch them all in one go), it's one of the best, although I prefer Flash Gordon. I saw all these great serials in the late fifties/early sixties & have all my favourites on DVD, maybe King Of The Rocket Men next.

S = The Wisdom of Solomon
H = The Strength of Hercules
A = The Stamina of Atlas
Z = The Power of Zeus
A = The Courage of Achilles
M = The Speed of Mercury

Other serials had feature films created by editing down the footage to a manageable feature length. But this is the first one I've heard of that purported to show the entire 12-chapter serial back-to-back in a single sitting. The IMDB says that the whole serial runs 216 minutes, so it appears as if they did no editing to create this 4-hour show, which hit theaters in 1966. (The serial had previously been re-released to theaters as a serial in 1953.)

There's supposed to be a new film version of this called, Shazam! staring Dwayne Johnson, the release date is 2019, so it probably starts shooting next year.

I saw this only the other week (DVD), three episodes a day over four days (these serials really don't work if you watch them all in one go)...

You are absolutely correct. Even the best of the serials fall into predictable patterns. Years ago I was watching one of the better Republic serials, "Manhunt of Mystery Island." Every episode had the same structure. They began with the reprise of the ending action sequence from the last episode, so you can see how the heroes escaped what seemed to be sure doom. Mid-way through the episode there was another action sequence, usually a car chase or fistfight in which some of the villain's henchmen may be put out of commission, but in which the villain (if he is present) always manages to escape. And the episode ends with the big action sequence (explosion, mine cave-in, fall from a height, etc.) in which the hero again seems to meet his doom, setting up the cliffhanger for the next episode to resolve.

Watching this pattern play out repeatedly can get old fast if you aren't a young child, even if the action sequences have some variety. And it can really get mind-numbing if one or two of the episodes are basically "re-cap" episodes, which repeat previous footage to clue in newcomers to the series (or non-weekly moviegoers) as to what has transpired so far. That's why you have to allow some time to pass between episodes or groups of episodes. Admittedly, though, it's hard to watch just one, when you are dying to know how the hero escaped death (unless it is readily apparent--e.g., the hero jumped from the car just before it went off the cliff).

Yeah, seeing them one after the other you can see the cheats in the cliffhanging endings. When I saw these at the cinema every Saturday morning (Saturday Morning Pictures as we used to call it, cartoon/short/serial/feature), there was a week went by between episodes, you'd see the next episode & think, how did I miss that.
