Attention U.S. TCM Subscribers: "In order to fully appreciate the rich complexity of what could be a deeply emotional perhaps life changing experience of watching this film, audience members must become "searchers" themselves. The closer one examines and identifies with the title characters and their quest, the richer its rewards become. This masterpiece pays off even more handsomely..." A great performance by Wayne in a great film. As Grant says in his well written essay, you learn something new each time you watch it. I know that is true for me.

Thank you so much for your compliment and shared appreciation of this complex and layered film.
"The Searchers" not only contains a great performance by Wayne, but may the best photographed Western ever directed by John Ford in color via the magic of VistaVision, for which two other great Westerns, "Shane" and "One Eyed Jacks" were also shot (the last named the very last feature film shot in the process). Hoch makes the visuals look like a Charles Russell painting and the VistaVision process gives it a mural like look.
