THURSDAY, JULY 20 INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS---the latest remake of the classic 1956 Don Siegel sci fi movie is underway at Warner Bros. The script is by David Leslie Johnson (THE CONJURING 2). Other versions were the 1978 remake starring Donald Sutherland, BODY SNATCHERS (1993) starring Gabrielle Anwar and THE INVASION (2207) starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI---director Rian Johnson commented on the sequel compared to previous movies, “The automatic temptation is to say, ‘Well, it’s a middle chapter, so it’s got kind of that EMPIRE thing.’ But at the same time, I really wanted to maintain the same sense of fun that J.J. had in THE FORCE AWAKENS, that to some extent in RETURN OF THE JEDI, which I was like 10 years old, that was prime for me when that came out – and the sense of playfulness, I think. So when I say EMPIRE, I guess I don’t want to give the impression that it’s kind of a dark, gloom, and doom. It was also really important to me that this was a fun adventure. I don’t know, it’s a mixed bag of a lot of different stuff. And, hopefully, some unique stuff, too.” Johnson later posted, "I would do another SW movie in a heartbeat. I've had the time of my life." Also, artwork released shows Kylo Ren's new ship, The TIE Silencer. GAME OF THRONES---synopsis and photos released for the July 23 episode. “Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) receives an unexpected visitor. Jon (Kit Harington) faces a revolt. Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) plans the conquest of Westeros.” THE WALKING DEAD---AMC announced that Season 8 will premiere on October 22. CONFEDERATE---HBO released the synopsis for the news series from the creators of GAME OF THRONES: "CONFEDERATE chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone – freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall." BIRD BOX---Sandra Bullock stars in this Netflix movie based on the novel about a woman and her two children who embark on a 20-mile journey down a river in a row boat while blindfolded to escape an alien invasion. The script is by Eric Heisserer (ARRIVAL). DOCTOR WHO---the BBC responded to fan criticism of Jodie Whitaker being the first female Doctor Who. “Since the first Doctor regenerated back in 1966, the concept of the Doctor as a constantly evolving being has been central to the programme. The continual input of fresh ideas and new voices across the cast and the writing and production teams has been key to the longevity of the series. The Doctor is an alien from the planet Gallifrey and it has been established in the show that Time Lords can switch gender. As the Controller of BBC Drama has said, Jodie is not just a talented actor but she has a bold and brilliant vision for her Doctor. She aced it in her audition both technically and with the powerful female life force she brings to the role. She is destined to be an utterly iconic Doctor. We hope viewers will enjoy what we have in store for the continuation of the story.” VLADIMIR PUTIN---Russian President Vladimir Putin has been removed from two movies because the studios fear retaliation by Russian hackers. Putin was removed from RED SPARROW starring Jennifer Lawrence as a Russian spy who is recruited by the CIA to be a double agent. Putin was also deleted from KURSK which is about the embarrassing sinking of the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk in 2000. Ajay Arora, ceo of security firm Vera, said, “For a studio to release a movie about Putin that makes him look like a fool would be suicide. That’s a certain way to be targeted [for retaliation].” SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING---director Jon Watts is in talks to return for the sequel. WONDER WOMAN---Charlize Theron explained why she didn't reunite with director Patty Jenkins who directed her Oscar-winning role in MONSTER, “No, I’m not in WONDER WOMAN. We’re friends. I think the world of her. We have a mutual respect for each other. She did come to me, and at the time I was either working on something or I don’t know. There was a reason I couldn’t do it.” THE X-FILES---Fox announced that Mitch Pileggi is returning as Walter Skinner for Season 11. IT---director Andy Muschietti talked about the movies, “We are doing that [two films]. We’ll probably have a script for the second part in January. Ideally, we would start prep in March. Part one is only about the kids. Part two is about these characters 30 years later as adults, with flashbacks to 1989 when they were kids.” RFK---Matt Damon stars in this Robert F. Kennedy biomovie. Nikolaj Arcel (THE DARK TOWER) is the director. HAWAII FIVE-O---Ian Anthony Dale, Meaghan Rath and Beulah Koale are replacing the departed Grace Park and Daniel Dae Kim. MEGA MAN---20th Century Fox movie underway based on the video game with the CATFISH duo of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman in negotiations to write and direct. Masi Oka (HEROES) is the producer.

Considering the original director had the movie taken away from him and slashed to ribbons and had new scenes (including an action climax!) added by another director under the supervision of the Wachowski Siblings, I'd like to think there was a good movie somewhere in that mess before the studio killed it. I know nothing of the circumstances surrounding the making of the movie. I might have to take another look, but, it was the lack of subtlety in the performances that shoved it into the land of clunk'n dunk, so that I was visibly 'wincing' and 'ouching' my way through. It was exactly the running off the rails one can see in Eagle Eye and The Happening, for example, where the central pivot of the story became seriously unstuck. It's that film-maker's nightmare when tension and suspense unintentionally backfire and the audience reaction is to laugh and snigger because the dramatic synchronisation between certain focused moments and their interaction with the overall story arc somehow destructively self-interfere, or, credibility suddenly goes out the window because of a clusterfuck of inanities which suddenly manifest to take you out of the moment. In The Happening, for example, I found myself telling Wahlberg not to piss off a single blade of grass . . . or else. It was like there were invisible signposts everywhere saying, "keep off the grass." When the disconnect moment happens, it's game over. This is a quote concerning The Happening from Kenny Williams from 2 years ago which I just read on YouTube: The fact that this somehow got made gives me so much hope because I think some of my scripts for my short films are better than this . . . I'm pissing myself it's so funny! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVwtCU48Koo
