It's harder than it looks!

I'm sure somebody has some ideas, but the truth is that most 'romantic comedies' are dialogue-driven primarily, and even in action scenes the music doesn't carry the weight.

Also, the best music in such films is used ironically, i.e. played straight, so it doesn't categorise itself as comedic.

But they'll be out there somewhere!

I think by "tips for modern romantic comedy scores" the poster is asking for a list of great recent (Hollywood?) romantic comedy scores.

Can anybody think of any?

"Keeping the Faith" by Elmer Bernstein has a great main title (which was replaced by a song in the final film) and is a very solid score, but that was 17 years ago.

"Amelie" has a great score, but that was 16 years ago.

Has there been a great romantic comedy score in the 2010s?

Modern French romantic comedies sometimes go for more classical scoring, but there aren't any titles coming to mind at the moment.

Although not a *romantic* comedy, a recent comedy score by Pino Donaggio, for the 2012 Italian film "La Buca," was quite impressive:

I love the "Main Theme" from About Time (2013) by composer Nick Laird-Clowes. He provides another track, "Golborne Road", that is piano based. The rest of the soundtrack on CD is made up of songs. Most effective is Paul Buchanan's "Mid Air" which kind of resonates through this film.

There's also Their Finest from 2016 by Rachel Portman.

Thanks a lot for your replies!!!

It's quite a difficult question. I'm fully aware of that!

The thing is, I'm editing a feature film right now and I'm trying to find new scores to use in the inevitble temp track.
I found out an orchestra based score does not work for this film. Neither a acore that 'wants' to be funny in musical clichees.

I think it must be something light and not to dramatic or jazzy in feel and tone. Maybe using a guitar?
Maybe something like Something's Gotta Give by Zimmer. But I think that' s to sweet in tone.
Also thinking of P.S. I love you by Powell...

Suggestions are really welcome and much appreciated!!!

Thanks!

I'd check out Two Weeks Notice by John Powell and various Rolfe Kent scores like Someone Like You, Nurse Betty, and Sideways.

What do you mean by 'modern'? Are we talking all the way back to the 90s and before, or are you talking about 2000 onwards? And must they take place in contemporary times or can they take place in older times?

Some good romantic scores in recent years that I really like include LA COEUR EN BRAILLE (Jakko), QUE D'AMOUR (Jakko), THEIR FINEST (Portman), THE HANDMAIDEN (Jo), LOVE & FRIENDSHIP (Suozzo), TESTAMENT OF YOUTH (Richter), LOST FOR WORDS (Matthias), FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD (Armstrong), THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ELEANOR RIGBY (Lux), IN MY DREAMS (Ross)....

[Edit: Damn...I missed the comedy bit. Not sure how many of those I mentioned are comedies]

He, he...yeah, I missed the 'comedy' bit before, as mentioned in the edit above.

Sideways - Rolfe Kent
The Holiday - Hans Zimmer
Heaven Can Wait - Dave Grusin (not modern, but a fave)
Arthur - Burt Bacharach (also not modern, but a fave)

Unnecessary goading aside, it's difficult to give answers considering how formulaic (and therefore undemanding) the genre is and how many here usually collect (or can only afford) blockbuster fare.

Oh dear God!

This was used as the backing track on a series of TV ads for BT Broadband I did the voiceovers on some years ago! I'd no idea it was film related.

P.S. it isn't film stuff .... 'Life of Riley' by Kevin MacLeod.

Nice story!!! Hahaha.

Written indeed "this is the kind of music I am looking for". So I need music like this, hopefully scores with this kind of lightness and mood. Not too complicated in style as mentioned earlier.
It's not the kind of music I like. I'm not a fan of that, but for this feature film it is the right stuff.

Thanks!

Thanks! The first two are in my bin already. Last two too far off as written in the example.

Thanks Thor!
I will try to find them, since I don't know them, but I guess you read the other posts as well?
Just before your reply I posted a musictrack which is the mood I am looking for.
Not easy at all! But that's why help is needed. Hahaha

Best,
S
