With all due respect this is, this is a very famous piece of film music.

I'm glad you discovered.

Enjoy.

Really? You weren't aware of the Herrmann at Fox box our our single release of Hangover Square, from whence this comes?

Thanks for your comments, both of you. I am surprised I haven't heard it since I've read quite a lot on Herrmann, including the excellent biography of him. Perhaps it's because it comes from a film I wouldn't have taken much interest in; I'm not sure. I've only vaguely heard of the title of this film anyway.

And, no, I wasn't aware of that boxed set to which you refer. Thanks for the heads-up. I don't contribute here very often; usually only when I find something of interest/importance.

First of all, seek out Hangover Square the film - it's wonderful - directed beautifully by John Brahm and the score is brilliant.

You might like (as I do) the 28-minute Hangover Square suite conducted by Rumon Gamba in the Chandos Film Music Series. It contains the full Concerto Macabre incorporating Herrmann's revisions for concert performance.

I'd second that recommendation along with the stunning Gerhardt recording from 1974 with the composer in attendance.

As well as the Joaquin Achucarro/NPO performance with Gerhardt for RCA, and the OST and Chandos mentioned, there's the David Buechner/NZPO for Koch, with it's own title-dedicated CD.

For those who know the great UK comedian and writer Spike Milligan (I never can figure out how well known he was in the US outside of the Lester Musketeer films), in one of his autobiographies he talks about going to see the movie after his demob from WWII. He hated it, kept mis-titling it 'Hanover Square', and decried the 'bloody depressing music', himself a jazz musician.

'takes all sorts, as they say.

It doesnt sound like Regie is a soundtrack fan nor interested in Herrmann's soundtrack music.

Wrong. I've read the Smith biography, have some recordings of Herrmann's music (a lot of it I can hear on U-Tube with quality bluetooth attachments) and presented a 2 hour lecture on the composer for a music group about 3 years ago. I think he's the greatest of all film music composers.

I've found it in 2 parts on "Daily Motion" and will watch it today. Loved the opening titles music!!!!!

I note that the lead actor died very prematurely!!

I thought you wrote you werent interested in his film music, but I see it was the film you werent interested. Dont need to see it to appreciate the score which has been available in various ways for decades.

I watched the film this afternoon and thought it only so-so. I felt I'd seen the plot before in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" but the music was Herrmann's brooding and high quality. Especially enjoyed the 'composer' playing the concerto as the place burned down. Lots of fire motifs in the film; I thought that was interesting.

It sounds fabulous on my new Bluetooth speakers!!! It really is a cross between Bartok and Prokofiev, with bits of Shostakovich thrown in. I love it!!! The orchestration is fabulous!!

A little background on Cregar. Hangover Square was his last picture. He was trying to lose weight on a crash diet so he could get other roles and it killed him. I also have in my modest collection of films I Wake Up Screaming, This Gun For Hire, and The Lodger. These are all worth watching. If you have some of the classical material of Herrmann this in my opinion is his attempt at a classical piano concerto.
