Dick Gregory's main feature film appearance came in the 1967 semi-fictional film SWEET LOVE, BITTER. Loosely based on the life of jazz saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker, Gregory plays "Richie 'Eagle' Stokes," a distinguished jazz saxophonist who has become frustrated and embittered by his contact with white society. He attempts to find relief through liquor, drugs, and women, including his white mistress, "Candy" (Jeri Archer). Herbert Danska directed the film. Initially produced and released by Film 2 Associates, the picture opened in New York on 30 January 1967. Later, the film was re-released by Peppercorn-Wormser Film Enterprises under the more lurid title IT WON'T RUB OFF, BABY!. Mal Waldron composed the jazz score, and played piano in the combo that recorded it for the Impulse! Records LP.
