Comedian Dick Gregory has died at age 84. He broke ground at the Playboy Club in Chicago and on Jack Paar's "Tonight Show," then became a potent activist for civil rights.

So sad. What a loss. Only a few weeks ago, after wishing he were still as visible in the media as often as when he started out in stand-up, I was overjoyed to see this on my favorite TV program:

Most of what's on the internet with Gregory is his ramblings on current events of the past few years. But here he is in his prime:

Dick Gregory's main feature film appearance came in the 1967 semi-fictional film SWEET LOVE, BITTER. Loosely based on the life of jazz saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker, Gregory plays "Richie 'Eagle' Stokes," a distinguished jazz saxophonist who has become frustrated and embittered by his contact with white society. He attempts to find relief through liquor, drugs, and women, including his white mistress, "Candy" (Jeri Archer). Herbert Danska directed the film. Initially produced and released by Film 2 Associates, the picture opened in New York on 30 January 1967.

Later, the film was re-released by Peppercorn-Wormser Film Enterprises under the more lurid title IT WON'T RUB OFF, BABY!. Mal Waldron composed the jazz score, and played piano in the combo that recorded it for the Impulse! Records LP.

The Dick Gregory that I remember was a diet formula entrepreneur. This had to have been the 1980s. One would never know that the man had been an insightful comedian or civil rights pioneer...it's like he was doing a Jane Fonda kind of thing (minus the technically not treason stuff, of course).
