That's 41 credited composers total on the series. Beginning with Paul Dunlap and ending with Broughton & Klein.

"Gunsmoke" ran from 1955 to 1975 and it wasn't just the show that shifted in the way it told stories and was shot, the scoring world of film and television was shifting a lot during those times and the music reflected that.

The series went from original library music and existing stock library for seasons on end, to having some episodes scored and some not, to ending with season thirteen and on with all episodes scores.

But even though I skipped Klatzkin's efforts (almost completely) and already talked about all the others, I'm not done yet discussing the scoring for the series, believe it or not!

Thanks to an old news article, I was able to identify one of the source cues and an episode it was used in:
The first episode of the series used a library cue by Mahlon Merrick, titled "Animal Snarls". I could find no further information about it or a clip. Sorry.

Paul Girlando (AKA: Paul Baron) created an original music library that was tracked and edited as needed in earlier seasons that have no credited composers. I don't know what seasons used it.

I contacted somebody from the estate of William Grant Still to find out what his contribution was and I was told a track he did (no name given) was re-used over and over again in a number of episodes.

Even though several sources cite Alex North as a composer and his official website says multiples, he is not credited on any episode. I asked for some help with that from the Northestate and I was told (by whomever replied) they'd look in to it, but I never heard back. I suspect North created some original music, like a library, and it was tracked, though I can't rule out existing music being tracked in as well.

There used to be a website (I can't find it anymore -- maybe it died) that listed projects Lalo Schifrin worked on along with musicians who played on individual projects, orchestrators, etc. Among the credits was this and it also listed people who worked on it. No episode or episodes were listed. So Schifrin must have either:
1. Had a score rejected.
2. Did partials and didn't get credit.
3. Did an episode and didn't get credit.

I supposed only whomever put together that now defunct website and Schifrin himself, can answer this.

An obscure composer named J. A. Bland did uncredited work for Klatzkin.

The CBS archive at UCLA, which contains tapes and paper work, has the following mystery listing for "Gunsmoke":

"Includes music composed/and or arranged by J.A. Bland, Stephen Foster, and Leon Klatzkin"
(LINK: http://www.oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/kt8x0nd51b/dsc/?dsc.position=2501#ref3073)

Though John Parker is only credited with 70 episodes, he told me (and his old website that went under) said 87. Clearly episodes that tracked his score, were counted.

Also, another website that is now gone, had a listing for demo tapes for the "Gunsmoke" TV movies. There were one or two demo tapes where the composers listed, were not the final composers on the films (I only remember one composer: Ken Thorne). By the way, for those curious, the TV movies (I keep saying they are bad, but I thought only two were made -- turns out five were made and I've not seen them all) and composers:

  • "Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge" (1987)
    By: Jerrold Immel
(this is the one Mannon returns in)

  • "Gunsmoke: The Last Apache" (1990)
    By: Bruce Rowland

  • "Gunsmoke: To the Last Man" (1992)
    By: Artie Kane

  • "Gunsmoke: The Long Ride" (1993)
    By: Artie Kane

  • "Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge" (1994)
    By: Artie Kane
(this was the final thing Arness was in before he died in 2011)

Composers who did arrangements of the series opening and closing credits (this is not a full list -- there isn't one):
  • Fred Steiner
  • Morton Stevens

There's also another story to tell, but I was told it in confidence, so I can't repeat it. Suffice to say, something isn't what it appears to be. Perhaps somebody who knows what I am talking about and wasn't told this on confidence, will speak up.

An out-of-date listing from my now defunct TV Scores website (the host provider went under without warning; having trouble finding a new provider)
    http://web.archive.org/web/20150902134848/http://www.tvscoring.150m.com/Gunsmoke.html

That will also help a certain user who wanted a full Klatzkin listing...

A series like "The Virginian" had uncredited episode scores, where composers did partials (maybe even full scores) and received no credit. I suspect "Gunsmoke" is no different and when some label dives in (or Jon Burlingame wants to join the discussion), more composers will be found. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

The series featured some of the most famous film and television composers to be working during the long-stretch of the show. It's a remarkable beast and I don't think there's another series that touched on composers and styles like this one did. I think it's unique.

In the end, shinning examples of composers included (but not limited to) Fred Steiner, Jerrold Immel, John Parker and Rene Garriguenc.

Now, you may think I'm done at this point, but no, I'm not done. Tomorrow, more to talk about!

I know -- what more can there be to say?

Well, turns out "Gunsmoke" had a spin-off series! Only one, which is hard to believe considering it ran for twenty seasons.

The character Dirty Sally, who was in three episodes, including the two-parter "Pike", got her own spin-off series in 1974 (January). Starring her and the guy who played Pike coming back, they basically kind of went around getting into situations and helping people.

Called "Dirty Sally", many of the "Gunsmoke" production team crossover. Also crossing over, were "Gunsmoke" composers. There is no full listing online of who worked on the series and I've been searching for years regularly for episodes to pop up on Youtube, but it never happens. However, about twenty-five minutes of one episode, audio only, was loaded to Youtube. Thanks to my tireless research, I was able to identify the composer of two episodes.

    "The Convict"
    By: Jerrold Immel
    AUDIO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I64rjxgkVm0

    Highlights:
  • 17:36 in: a low-key piece with acoustic guitar and a bass flute.
  • 19:39 in.

The composers I've found so far who worked on the spin-off series:
    John Parker
    Bruce Broughton
    Jerrold Immel

    ASCAP also lists Leon Klatzkin.

    It ran for fourteen episodes.

It used a theme song instead of an instrumental theme:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jhGSBwWi-M

However, the CBS archive at UCLA shows they had trouble pinning down a theme, as there are multiple versions tried out before the final pick:
    http://www.oac.cdlib.org/view?style=oac4;view=dsc;docId=kt8x0nd51b;query=e..

  • There's a dubbed version.
  • A version listed as "Morford Version".
  • A demo version.
  • One listed as a "Rodriguez Version".

That's Gene Morford, and he did the series theme. I think Parker did the instrumental backing.

There has been no release of the episodes.

Damn Youtube is blocking "Mannon" fiercely. Two loads appeared in the last two days, and both were blocked quickly, while all the other episodes on those channels remained unblocked.

Yup, got to be the rape that's getting this one shit canned while other episodes loaded illegally remain.

Additional composers, via BMI and ASCAP (neither make differences between original material and tracked material):

  • Emil Cadkin
  • Robert Drasnin (probably tracked from "Lancer")
  • Joel Goldsmith. Clearly got to be an error. They also have Jerrald K. Goldsmith, so Jerry already has his own listing.
  • Billy May
  • Don B. Ray
  • Warren Barker
  • Russell Garcia
  • Dimitri Tiomkin
  • Daniele Amfitheatrof
  • Bernard Green
  • Marius Constant
  • Arthur Wilkinson
  • Lucio Agostini
  • Jack Cathcart (Who? The name isn't clickable on ASCAP)
  • Laurence Rosenthal
  • William Gomez
  • Umberto Galassi
  • John Campbell
  • Ralph Rainger
  • William Barnett
  • Carlo Savina

It only occurred to me to search them now, otherwise I would have done that back when I was finishing the thread originally.

Talk about a freaky coincidence -- there's a TV movie called "Chester, Yesterday's Horse" and scored by Richard Shores. Shores worked on this series and there was a character named Chester (also an episode name vaguely similar: "To Ride a Yeller Horse"; also had a character named Chester in it).

It's a super lame attempt to bring the scoring back up for discussion. ;-)

Someone finally managed it. It's a little edited (that's probably how it managed to avoided getting blocked).

    "Mannon"
    By: Jamie Mendoza-Nava
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWTSmHpxy20

This is his only effort for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 3:05 in: some menacing brass with some kind of plucked instrument and some dissonant woodwinds.
  • 36:05 in: the showdown music, which also closes out the episode.

One of the series best episodes. For me the only thing I don't like is the annoying singing Mannon does.

The score over all works. There's nothing wrong with it per se, and when the finale comes, it works very well, but it's just not on par with efforts from other episode scores, especially those of Immel.

    Festus: "Will Mannon?"
Kitty: "He's down at the Longbeach right now."
Festus: "You wanna talk about a fast gun-hand? If you was to take a snake's tongue and grease it 'n' tie it to a bolt of lightning, you couldn't get nothin' as fast as his gun-hand."

Peters "If I were just younger, I'd--"
    Mannon: "You'd still be talkin'."

And finally, I have concluded my work on the show.

I've made a suite of most of the scoring I mentioned from "Call Me Dodie" -- a score I listed as a "Top tier" effort. Some of the score in the episode just had too much SFX for my taste and I had to skip using it. Enjoy!

For anyone interested, The Goldsmith Odyssey just released a new episode which includes two more exclusive complete Goldsmith Gunsmoke scores, "Love Thy Neighbor" and "Old Faces" (save one short cue from the former which wasn't on our source) in music-only form:

    http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/1958638-episode-22-gunsmoke-love-thy-neighbor-old-faces-1961

For those who missed it, our first podcast on Gunsmoke last year featured three exclusive complete (music-only) Goldsmith Gunsmoke scores:

Enjoy! There's a lot of excellent music (plus our thorough analysis), there...

In 1965 Goldsmith scored a film called "Ten Little Indians", ...

What is that? I haven't heard of it (well, that one, specifically - who won't eventually hear of "Ten Little Indians"?), but all I see for 1965 is one scored by Malcolm Lockyer. Is there some Goldsmith gem I've missed?

How did that mistake slip by me??? It's 1973, "One Little Indian".

    Knowledge sought.

Here is a list of titles I found that have reportedly tracked score from the episode "Major Glory":

    "The Wild Wild West"
  • "The Night of the Vipers"
  • "The Night of Montezuma's Hoarder"
(one of those also reportedly contains score from "Cattle Barons")

UPDATE: While information online claims score from "Cattle Barons" is tracked into "The Night of the Vipers", I checked the episode twice -- NO SCORE from "Cattle Barons". Score from "Major Glory" is tracked into "Cattle Barons" and I think that is what is confusing people.

    "Cimarron Strip"
  • "Journey to a Hanging"

EDIT: Turns out multiple episodes track "Major Glory", even ones with a credited composer. I've made submissions for each case to IMDb.

Anybody knos any other episodes of this or any series that score from "Major Glory" is tracked into?

Music-wise, Bruce Geller is known as a song writer: see his input on "Rawhide" and "Mission: Impossible".

The songs were “Buy Me That Glass Of Wine” and “Ten Tiny Toes” which were first used in the two part episode of “Rawhide” (“Damon’s Road”) and were reused in the episode of “Mission:Impossible” (“Illusion”, which were sung by Barbara Bain.

    "Two Tall Men"
    By: Fred Steiner
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZZ3n2SUh6w

This episode asks the question: What do you do when you need a doctor and the doctor is the one who needs it? And the town of assholes -- continuing to asshole -- has no Matt around to keep them in check.

    Highlights:
  • 21:35 in: a cue that opens up with an oboe and then some soft brass and strings. More mood than musical accomplishment, so don't expect the world from this cue.
  • 33:37 in: another cue badly edited into one before it. But a good cue.
  • About 37:15 in.
  • 38:40 in. More after it ends from a commercial break.
  • About 46:20 in.

Good God -- that fire scene. You could never get away with that today. An actual wooden beam fell on a guy's back, then he fell into the fire!

I guess it's an okay episode. It's a good example of rushing to judgment.

    "The New Society"
    By: Fred Steiner
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBUoFu16SZc

    Highlights:
  • 0:15 in: The light dramatic take on the series' theme, with snare drum, opening over the title card and into the episode.
  • About 8:50 in: a nice cue, again badly edited into another.
  • 29:10 in: a cue that runs the gambit of emotions for almost a minute.
  • About 33:33 in.
  • About 43:40 in: some action music that reminds me of Goldsmith.
  • 46:00 in.
  • 49:13 in: the closing cue with strings and a little harmonica. Timpani and brass build with the strings and it closes out on a low-key way.

An okay episode. Kind of ambitious in it's complex storyline.

    "He Who Steals" (season finale)
By: Bruce Geller, Van McCoy and Herschel Burke Gilbert
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd4QdCvkQBU

Though Gilbert conducted a number of episode scores, this is the only episode he and the other two contributed to.

Yes, that's Bruce Geller the producer and writer of TV series like "Mission: Impossible".

I was surprised by this because years ago when I was trying to solve the composer on each episode of the series and turned to some help from fans because not every episode was on Youtube or TV Land (which was airing it and sometimes put episodes on their site). I was told Bruce was the composer. No other names mentioned. I went to double check it to make sure they didn't mean Harry Geller and that's when I found the surprises.

    Highlights:
  • 6:24 in: pretty sure this is a tracked bit from a Schrager-scored episode.
  • About 10:25 in: a nice piece with woodwinds and an acoustic guitar. It's short. More at about 12:35 in.
  • 24:41 in.
  • About 26:35 in.
  • Somewhere shortly after 31:00 in.
  • About 32:30 in.
  • 36:52 in.
  • 45:51 in. Another cue that sounds like it was crossfaded into a previous one.

By the way, a song on McCoy's website from an unspecified episode (not this one -- no songs in it):
    http://vanmccoymusic.com/van/discography/60s/play.php?id=69

And that concludes Season 10. Stay tuned today for Morton Stevens, and more returning names, in a few hours.

And it’s rumored that Gilbert contributed some cues to “Gilligan’s Island” during its first season. He left C.B.S. as their West Coast Music Director due to corporate meddling and was replaced in 3/‘65 by Morton Stevens.

Something I learned today while going threw the "Cattle Barons" score:

I learned that that episode contains multiple edited-up cues from Stevens' Emmy-winning "Major Glory" episode score. Removing those, and the fight cue with banjo that is obviously from another episode if not another TV series, I came up with 6:00 of original scoring. Assuming stuff was not dropped from the episode, that's one short score.

And even then I think two of the cues are tracked from prior Stevens work. And one cue is an edit of another. In the end I think two cues, something over three minutes, is all the original work in the episode.
